In 2012, Carlson opened Harvest Community Foods - a local foods grocer and ramen bar that focuses on transparency and sustainability.
Andrea Carlson came on board as a consultant at a new local grocer, the idea for which had been crowd-sourced, as had the name. Just a few months later the consultant became the owner of Harvest Community Foods. The grocer became more than just a retail store operation. They threw in a simple menu of ramen and udon options, most around 12 bucks. Before you know it, they stuck oil, and it drew a crowd.
I came here for a walk with my friend. The store front doesn't look anything special, but once you walk in, there's alot of charm, and alot of products. From grab and go items, in house kombucha, vegan puddings, non gmo items, and gluten free deserts like living lotus.
We ordered 29, the butternut squash miso ramen. It was indeed good. Then 39 came, the pork with candied bacon ramen... The flavours were everywhere. Yes it did taste good but don't be expecting a true Japanese style ramen. This is not the place for it. Harvest gave it their own twist, and nothing is wrong with that because it was still tasty and comforting. The vegan caramel pudding was omg so good. I could eat it for days!
Service is still 100% fantastic. Our server was kind enough to grab a table and 2 chairs for the both of us, since my dog was crying outside tied to a parking meter. Overall, I love their retail grocery store. I would love to spend more time here again and try...
Read moreI knew this place was overpriced, but I went and got food from here anyway. Anyway, I got the two side salads and added on tofu. It came to $11.50 before tax, and I got about ten bites worth of food.
Kale Gomae (4/5) The almond-hazelnut sauce was actually pretty good, and I liked the crunch from the almonds and hazelnuts on top. However, the kale was extremely bitter and really messed with the flavours of the dish, as it stole the spotlight away from the sauce and made the whole dish just super bitter.
Cabbage Salad (4/5) I liked the maple dressing, which had a slight sweetness and wasn't overpowering, and I also enjoyed the crunch from the pumpkin seeds. However, it was way too overpriced for a tiny bit of shredded cabbage and some dressing.
Tofu Add-On (3/5) This was literally just a tiny slab of pan-fried firm tofu with no seasoning whatsoever and so it was definitely not worth $1.50. However, I do like tofu so it was fine.
Overall, this place is definitely overpriced as the portions are so incredibly tiny and I can't justify paying that much for so little food even though the flavours are good. It was worth a try, but I don't see myself...
Read moreThe first time I came to Harvest was not so good. I guess I was too early and the gentleman working was a little short with me. I decided to give it another chance about six months later after I had heard rave reviews about their ice cream. It was even better than I imagined. Slowly but surely I have been going more and more often. I now buy eggs, bacon, (of course ice cream) and now noodles. There is a lovely asian girl who prepares the noodles perfectly and with care. (January Second) The cashier was also very polite and friendly(Malika) . Tonight though once again (January 3) I had this very unfriendly or maybe she was socially awkward or shy... either way my interpretation was that she was rude and only cared about getting out of there. It was 7:50 pm. Not sure when it closes but she did not say hello and scowled at me and told me I had better pay cash. Is it that hard for people to be a little friendly? Anyway, I am very impressed with what the store has to offer and would recommend it to my friends to visit but at a certain point service does matter. I will give it once more chance before I take my...
