It seems like it's been forever since I last had dim sum in Chinatown... That was back before Jade Dynasty opened up in the Mah Society building back in the mid 2000s. (Anyone remember Ming's which used to be located in the building next door?) The interior of the restaurant looks like they've had a renovation a few years ago and they have nice high ceilings inside. Service was a bit slow (I think they try to make batches of the same dishes so you might wait longer for a particular dish if no one else orders it). The taro with assorted meat dumpling had a tasty meat filling but the taro was a bit denser than I prefer. The steamed chicken claws had a good sauce but the chicken feet themselves weren't too tender. We liked the stuffed eggplant with shrimp paste and thought the crystal prawn dumplings (haw gow) were on point. But the beef rice rolls were just a bit standard and the siu mai wrappers were a bit chewy. The bean curd wrap with enoki mushrooms was very light (not having any meat in the filling). I liked it but it fell apart quite easily. The last dish to show up was probably the best... Steamed beef balls with bean curd sheets. These turned out with a perfectly bouncy texture. Overall, I'd say the food was pretty good but it is a bit slow (and nearby parking isn't as cheap as you'd think it should be). Update: Revisted in Feb 2024 for dim sum. Prices are fairly reasonable at about $8 per dish. Deep fried egg tofu with mixed mushrooms was good and loved the sauce but I was expecting more mushrooms. Nicely prepared pan fried radish cakes with noticeable chunks of radish inside and a light and crisp skin inside. They call their chiu chow dumplings Rissoles. Big filling but the wrapper is a bit floury. Also had the steamed spareribs with black bean sauce, Chinese donut rice roll and the black sesame balls (hot and moltan black sesame on the inside).

Had dinner at Jade Dynasty in Chinatown with the family last week on a beautiful Sunday. We were craving dim sum for dinner, which is usually only served at lunch, but here it’s available all day—a huge plus! We loved the noodles, sweet and sour pork, soup, and all the dim sum we ordered. I only rated it 4* because though they’re good, but there’s no unique dish that I’ve discovered from here so far. Ambiance is low key which is nice for a casual day. The ambiance from the outside is definitely a head-turner, though the inside is more on the average side. The service was okay, nothing exceptional but nothing bad either. You ask something, they’ll bring it so it’s straightforward. Didn’t ask then you might miss it. We’ve come here quite a few times when we’re in the mood for some comforting dim sum. The prices are on the low-mid range, and the quality is mid-range, making it a solid choice when you’re looking for something simple and satisfying. It’s also great for families—especially since the kids aren’t big fans of fine dining. Definitely recommended if you’re craving dim sum and want a relaxed, family-friendly spot.

Jade Dynasty Restaurant is the first dim sum restaurant I've tried in Canada. Upon entering, you climb a flight of stairs into the buzzing atmosphere. The staff here speak primarily Canto, so be patient with them! Service is definitely a miss, but that's common in other dim sum restaurants I've been to. The dumplings and steamed rice rolls were soft, fresh, and had the perfect texture. Filling was juicy and generous. Almost everything was well-seasoned, though some items were under (gailan, beef rolls) and others were over (pork buns, chicken feet). The flavors here are overall less sweet and more heavy on the aromatics than Californian dim sum. The food also came out one by one, but was very fresh, high-quality, and delicious! The Wi-fi password was on the menu (no spaces btw) and bathrooms were clean. They also did not refill our water and tea; it was difficult to call a server. EDIT: The har gow and shu mai are some of the BEST I've ever had!!!! Delicate skins with perfect texture, juicy fillings, perfectly seasoned. I'd return just to eat them again.

For my experience, the service was excellent. Our pot of tea was always full of hot water and the server even changed out an order for me at late notice because she suggested I take another look at the menu in case I wanted a different option (same item, different variation). The women who waited on us were friendly, accommodating, and efficient, which is to my preference.

Now onto the food: The XLB was very good. Obviously house-made, very flavorful. The char siu bao were also quite good. Filling is pretty sweet but not too sweet, which is usually why I choose to stay away from ordering it despite loving this dish. We also had the gai lan, which unfortunately was tough and a little bitter, but that is a supply issue rather than a prep issue. I did not care for the luo buo gao either.

If I lived in Vancouver, I would be back often to try the entire menu. Everything that came out of the kitchen looked fresh, beautiful, and were large portions. Maybe some hit or misses, but overall a great experience and would readily recommend to anyone. I’ll be sure to return on...
