The decor and visual ambience of this place is award-worthy. Itโs a mid century modern 70โs aesthetic nailed perfectly with giant lampshades, rust orange lounge velvet couches, soothing warm lights and beautiful high ceilings.
Unfortunately all that gorgeous ambiance is completely ruined by the utterly generic hip hop played at 120 decibels. I asked the sever if the music could be turned down because I had to literally shout at my friend to be heard when she was 1.5 feet in front of my face. Thatโs acceptable and even expected at a bar at 11 pm but not at a sit-down dinner at 8:30 pm. The sympathetic server informed me that unfortunately the owner of this establishment has forbidden servers to change the music that he has selected and that includes the volume even if a customer complains (this is a nasty trick by the restaurant industry to make tables turn over more quickly and do more business than if people lingered).
Meals range from $15-$35 and cocktails are $15-20. The food was delicious! I had tuna tataki and tater tots fried to crispy perfection with cheddar cheese dipping sauce and I practically inhaled my food. It was my friends first time ever having tater tots and she loved them. My cocktail was sublime BUT it was also 80% ice and I was able to finish it completely in three sips, so that was a bummer (Honey Toast Punch it was called). Yet another cheap trick to cheat customers.
This place could have been a gem in my book, I initially favorited it on google maps after my delicious meal but after my cocktail and my interaction with the server, I removed it. Itโs a shame as this place has such potential to be something special but my friend and I agree it seems owner/management is more concerned with appearance than substance.
There are simply too many other places in Vancouver that also serve outstanding food and drinks with out other issues that I have no reason to return here. (If the owner is reading these reviews, please consider playing disco and other music from the 60โs and 70โs, it makes so much more sense considering the mid century modern decor! And consider playing it soft enough that guests can speak...
ย ย ย Read moreSo today it was my first time at Mount Pleasant and I was extremely disappointed.
Even if ambience is nice. Place looks beautiful and new. The food wasnโt bad but totally overpriced. I definitely could see that because place just opened and they have some issues with serving people which is also ok.
The issue that my friend and I had is that while my friend went to a bathroom her glass with the water exploded out of nowhere. I am 5 month pregnant and was sitting right next to that glass that shattered into little pieces. I was shocked and people who were next to us were shocked as well. The bar attender who saw it immediately came to our table to clean up. After that nobody, absolutely nobody came to us until the end of the evening. We asked for manager and explained her the situation, and the only thing we got was a lazy apology. We weโre not offered any compensation which was so weird especially for the new place that just opened. We had to ask her to compensate us and we got our 2 drinks off and 50% on food. Our total bill came to $20 which from our perspective was such an insignificant cost to a restaurant which ruined our dine in experience. We had only bar attender and one server who was really empathetic towards our situation, but the manager was just awful at her job. After she talked to us, we asked for a bill and before she completed our request she started to turn on the signs on the wall that made us feel even more frustrated. We felt like our situation and experience did not...
ย ย ย Read moreI went there at about 4pm.
I was pretty busy and loud inside because of a party, but the front balcony was quieter. It looks like a trendy favourite for locals.
No info about happy hour on the menus or from staff, so not sure what time that happens.
Menu items are around $20-30 each. I ordered a beef tartare ($21). When it arrived i saw it came with some normal bread, asked for some gluten-free bread, and they checked and they said they didnt have any, and server asked me if i would like some tatertots instead. I said sure.
The beef tartare was a big portion as an appie, enough as a meal for 1 or to share. The meat was ok, was not the most tender but still fresh.
When the bill came, it was $8 for the tatertots. I thought it was a replacement for having no gluten-free bread, because she was offering it as a choice. I didnt know she was just suggesting other stuff for me to order from the menu??
Anyway, even though i explained this, she still charged $8 for Tatertots. It is weird for a high end restaurant to charge someone when offering a replacement. If you want the customer to order off the menu again, you would bring the menu and let them look again? It's not that the server was unfriendly, she was friendly, it's just if you say "we dont have bread, would u like some potatoes/tater tots instead", in most high end restaurants, that sounds like a substitution, not a new order.
I would have had a meat-only tartare or ordered something else instead of $8 for plain tatertots, if i...
