We had brunch on Sunday Apr29 and it was the most delicious & satisfying meal we had during our 2wk stay in Vancouver. We had decided to ditch the limo ride to the airport and spend a little more time on the ground. My husband had the steak hash and loved it although he would have liked the grain toast instead of the baguette. I ordered the Brunch Special which was Salmon & Halibut stuffed avocado bake served with spinach salad & poached eggs. This dish completely blew my mind away as I thought it will be stuffed with flaked mixed fish. What arrived was 2 avocado halves each respectively stuffed with fresh salmon and halibut chunk & each seasoned differently. The salmon was subtly herbed and the halibut was a little bolder. They came topped with asparagus & multi coloured cherry tomato slices The salad looked alarmingly simple with just spinach & cucumber but the pistachio dressing made it into a star. All the flavours were quite unique and in harmony and with the eggs, no other sauces were needed. The garnish was fresh mango agar jelly drops topped with mango slices ,strawberry and a mint leaf. and this is what made me write this review. It left my mouth feeling fresh & ready to kiss my husband after eating fish & eggs The jelly was like biting into 100 perfectly ripe sweet mangoes . Just the garnish alone was award worthy never mind the rest. I dare say it was the only dish with real personality that I encountered in the city. Healthy & delicious. And for just $17. We spent double that for mediocre tasting food in some celebrated places. We had good meals in Vancouver but most restaurants seem to be playing it safe and breakfast seems to be limited to smoked meats, pork bellies and sugary things like waffles & French toast. We are from Germany where it is an anathema to have junk food desserts for breakfast. No offence but it was also refreshing to eat fish that was not seasoned with some version of Chinese/Japanese flavours which seems to be the only way fish is served in most restaurants here. The place was quite busy but we did not feel rushed and our server was attentive and charming. While stuffed avocados are nothing new but its mere presence and it’s great execution indicated a kitchen with a deep understanding of ingredients & profound love of the craft to take those extra steps even for a modest brunch dish on a rainy Sunday. It reminded me of my math professor father’s favourite saying . All you need to do great math is pencil & paper & the desire. It was the perfect ‘HAPPYEND’...

After I was reading some of the lower rating reviews here I found out I am not the only one who has the exact same experience that happened to me and my friends tonight. We booked our table at 5pm tonight to celebrate our friend who is expecting her first child. When we arrived we found out they have happy hours on Saturday so we ordered few dishes and drinks around 5:40 pm. And around 6:20 the server with short hair (not our server) asked us if we are still eating the food which still has half of the portion, we said yes we are still working on it. And then about 6:35 the same server came again asking the same question while my friends were in the washroom, I said my friends are in the washroom they might want to finish it and then he seems very rush and asked me if he can just take my plate away. How rude. He didn't ask if I want to order other dishes and even if I wanted I wouldn't spend more money at this restaurant since they didn't really want us to be there.
The most annoying thing was when my friends came back from washroom that server came right away to ask my friends if he can take that food away. At that moment we felt so uncomfortable and we just said we don't want the food anymore. And then the bill came right away, our server came and didn't wait for us to even open the bill he rushed his credit card machine to us while we were still having conversation. At that time the restaurant still had few empty tables and no customers waiting, I don't understand why you guys wanted to rush us to leave? We actually wanted to order more food and drinks but who will want to spend more money when your server kept coming in to take your unfinished food away or forcing the bill to us when we weren't ready yet? How rude the service was? The server came again and literally asked us to leave because "there were people waiting for our table" while there were 3 tables empty and only 2 people were waiting by the door.
I have never been to a restaurant that treated their customers so poorly. You want to be a restaurant with higher price mark you need to provide the same standards of services. This was my first time to visit West Oak and for sure I will not return again. You should feel ashamed when you asked your customer to leave. I can't believe we were treated that way. If this is how you treat your happy hour customers, I won't recommend anyone who wants to come to...
Read moreWent to Westoak over the weekend for a birthday dinner. Our reservation was made weeks in advance however when we arrived we were told they didn’t have a table big enough to accommodate us. This was frustrating since we made a reso for 7 people and they had us seated in a half booth that was very tight. They provided us with some drinks and appies on the house which was nice and we definitely appreciated this but they informed us that we would be moved to a larger table as soon as one became available. We were there for roughly 2.5 hours, maybe longer and we were not moved or made aware of any changes. We felt as though they brushed us off and they didn’t acknowledge their mistake after that. We decided to continue with ordering our food and drinks anyway and some girls from our group had dietary restrictions like a celiac allergy and another is vegetarian. When our main meal came out these two received orders that were incorrect. They informed our server, who then very clearly rolled her eyes at our table. She went back and informed the manager named GP. He approached our table and was extremely rude to all of us. He said to us: “you girls look miserable sitting here and I heard you’re unhappy with the food” he continued to say: “I don’t want you girls to leave and not pay for your food so that’s why I’m checking in on your table”. First off, we are not the type of people to leave without paying for a service, even though it was the worst restaurant experience I’ve ever had. Secondly, we were enjoying our night regardless of the mistakes they had made up until this point. We were laughing and having good conversation I’m pretty confident none of us looked miserable other than the server who rolled her eyes at our group. This entire interaction turned us off from the restaurant so we got our bills and left. We didn’t order more food or drinks. We just decided this place wasn’t worth our time anymore. I hope no one else is treated like this at their birthday dinner. Especially if you’ve made your reservation weeks in advance and been genuine customers the entire night. And I have to say the manager, GP did not give off a professional attitude in any way shape or form. He was dressed in casual clothing and not put together at all. He was rude, dismissive, and not once apologized for any inconvenience the restaurant caused. You could imagine the shock on our faces when we found out he is the manager of the fancy restaurant. Nothing about...
