I am heartbroken to have to write this review. This was my go-to place for a pizza in HK for years. I've recommended it to so many people, and had birthdays, leaving dinners and first dates here. But it seems that there has been a major shift, a complete overhaul of staff and decor as well as a change in the menu. The staff always used to greet you with a smile, they knew me and my order and were always extremely attentive, professional and warm during all our meals at Camionetta (ofcourse I do not expect new staff to know my order already but some positive service wouldv'e been nice). My last two experiences since the change have been disappointing to say the least. About a week ago I made a reservation. I had some gut feeling I should double confirm it a few hours before I was meant to dine there, “Yes we’ve got you down as 2 people at 7:00pm, See you tonight”. I show up at exactly 7:00, I say my name and receive the response “Ooooh we are really full tonight” the tone was so off, it was as if he was telling me it's not possible for me to dine. “Okay, but I have a booking?”, he then somewhat reluctantly guided me to a table. I sat there for 15 minutes and nobody even offered me water, until I had to ask. It took them an additional 15 minutes before we had to hail someone to take our order, for both drinks and food. So at this point we had been there for half an hour and only just ordered, as nobody was paying us any attention.
The unique selling point of this restaurant in my opinion was that you used to be able to get a single pizza but half of one choice of toppings and half of another, my family used to love this feature, but alas that is no longer something they offer. The pizzas arrived and were excessively oily. There was a piece of greaseproof paper under the pizza on the tray, which kept ending up in my mouthfulls because the pizza was so greasy. The paper was disintegrating and making it difficult to enjoy the food. I had never experienced such greasy pizza at La Camionetta before the recent changeover. Both times I’ve visited since said change, the pizzas have been so oily that it’s impossible to eat them with your hands—the slices are too floppy. I did look around and I noticed all the pizza's looked incredibly oily, so it wasn't just a mistake with our two.
The layout of the restaurant also has been designed to try and make the most money as possible rather than consider diners comfort. I was so close to the guy at the table next to me it was uncomfortable, it was far too intimate and when I got up to leave while squeezing between my table and the next to get out, my backside was right in the next door table's dinner. I noticed that the walkway for the waiters to move through was so tight that I saw a waiter actually trip over and plenty struggle to maneuver around the restaurant.
Upon speaking to the table next to me, who by the way had also booked a table of 7 in advance, they were incredibly disapointed too, he also thought the tone of waiters and lack of service was off. Additionally, the table they had been given was so small it could only fit about 4 people comfortably around it, and they did mention this to the waiter but no adjustments were made so they had to squash around this tiny table and one guy laughed and said to my friend on my table "I'm basically sitting on your lap", which is exactly how it felt. It was uncomfortable.
While we were eating our mains a waiter then came over and told us that we had overstayed the dining time, dining time is 1 hour 15 minutes and we had been there 1 hour 30 minutes. Which was true but the reason we were so behind was because it took them 30 minutes to take our order so of course we had no choice but to overstay, and then felt rushed to leave with food still on our plates. Not a good experience, I don’t think I would go back again which is really sad for me as a loyal customer of...
Read moreWow! Literally The best pizza in town! A small pizza place owned by the lovely Italian couple, serving delicious and authentic handcrafted pizzas! They don’t take reservations, we arrived at 6:30 and waited for 1.5 hour for the seat, but totally worth it! The waiting time is ok for me as there are lots happy hour choices in the area, I just went somewhere else to grab a drink to wait. We ordered the platter with fresh burrata cheese, Parma ham, and focaccia as stater, also the beef tartare. The burrata cheese was sooooo fresh, one of the best in Hong Kong. And this generous portion starter is only $158! The beef tartare taste so authentic, reminds me of the ones I tried in Italy. They have a variety of different pizzas, but don’t worry, you get to choose half half ! So we tried 4 flavours in 2 pizzas!!! So thoughtful of them! Our choices were LA Bomba + LA Calarrese (the Tomatoe sauce base) and LA Mortadella + LA Foresta (cheese base) I love all of them, they were all incredibly good, no kidding. Their pizza dough was so chewy and airy, honestly blew my mind away in every bite. I also ordered their dessert, tiramisu and cannoli. Their cannoli was filled with hazelnut and chocolate ganache, it was pretty yum too, the size was good enough, but I personally would prefer ricotta cream filling instead of chocolate. happy hour until 8pm, aperol spritz only $55, and house wine only $35, or $245 a bottle of house wine. Really good deal. Besides the good food they serve, I have to mention that their staff is extremely friendly and attentive too. I was totally impressed by their hearty service, I didn’t expect a small and busy resto like this could still manage to keep their service up to standard, really appreciate it. Overall, I think everything is insanely good and good value for money, this was such a delightful dining experience, I can’t wait to...
Read moreTonight we had dinner at La Camionetta in Hong Kong and it was an unforgettable experience. The restaurant has such a warm, welcoming atmosphere with a true Italian spirit that immediately makes you feel at home.
We ordered two pizzas – the Caprese pizza and the Mortadella with pistachio and stracciatella pizza – and both were simply outstanding. The dough was light, airy, and perfectly baked with that authentic Neapolitan texture that is crisp on the outside yet soft inside. The Caprese pizza was fresh and full of flavor, with creamy mozzarella, ripe tomatoes, and basil blending beautifully together. The Mortadella pizza, on the other hand, was rich and indulgent – the pistachio cream paired with the stracciatella and slices of mortadella created the perfect balance of savory and creamy flavors.
To complement the meal, we enjoyed refreshing Aperol Spritz, which was the perfect match for such delicious pizzas.
La Camionetta truly delivers an authentic Italian dining experience in Hong Kong. If you’re looking for incredible pizza made with passion and quality ingredients, this is the place to go. We left already planning...
