I had lunch at Lao Beijing Restaurant in Wan Chai today for the very first time. What a hidden gem!!
Very interesting format for lunch. For HKD 80, you have a choice of one dish out of a selection of 26 entrées. Additionally, you will have access to the self serve food bar with 2-3 different cold dishes, soup, and congee. Chinese tea is included free of charge, and canned soft drinks are HKD 5 each.
I picked the Kung Pao Chicken for the entrée. 5/5!! Everything was right about this dish – good portion size, very delicious and flavourful, and not overly spicy. I also requested a bowl of plain white rice with no extra charge.
Cold dishes vary, but all were delicious and provided a nice contrast to the spicy entrée.
Today's soup was tomato and cassava with pork. Again, good flavour and no MSG.
The ”congee“ was mung bean and millet congee with sugar on the side. It was so delicious and such a healthy choice for the hot humid weather, I had three bowls.
All of the servers were very friendly.
It seems to get a bit busy during the lunch hour with mostly workers from nearby offices, so you may need to share tables with others. However, the atmosphere is still very tranquil, not excessively noisy, and good for carrying out a conversation.
Overall, a very satisfactory and filling lunch...
Read moreVery disappointing experience. Very expensive for below average food. We went for dinner and had problems finding a good seat even thou we had a reservation. The room is strangely cut so that some tables are not in the main room anymore. Not cozy at all. We had chicken, sour cabbage and dandan noodles. The chicken was reheated and still cold inside when it came and the cabbage was not sour as we were used to it. When coming home we had stomach problems from all the oil... I wouldn’t come back, every wet market has better food for...
Read moreJust ok. The Peiking duck was quite good, juicy skin. the sweet and sour pork was a bit disappointing, not crispy and the sauce just ok. Beijing fried rice is a different style from the cantonese one so it is worth trying. A bit oily but manageable. Beef with onion is good. The seatings are a bit annoying as they are on the main way people just keep walking next to you, unless you have a suite then it's different. Servers are not...
