Drawn by the famous char siu (BBQ Pork), I visited this place for lunch. Under the requirement to keep social distancing, the tables are widely spread, and group size is small. Hence, the restaurant is not noisy at all (usually, Chinese restaurants are rather noisy and would make my eardrum jumping!)
Service : the number of waiters are considerably low. Thus, I need to wait a bit before I can place my order. Yet, they serve tea and appetizer quick. Also, the attitude of service staff is good.
Food: I ordered BBQ pork, green potato leaves with Shanghai Ham in almond stock.
The pork is not famous for nothing. Please refer to the gif I posted. Only when a BBQ Pork is served warm will have this moving juice. The meat is very tender and the chef applies layers of maltose sugar to intensify the sweet meaty taste. It is a high quality BBQ Pork but I would not say that it is the best I've tried in HK. At least you can find similar quality at fairer price.
However, it was the potato leaves that surprised me. The almond stock tasted good. I can tell that it was made with freshly grained almonds. The ham, though only a few slices to enhance the flavor, are with high quality ham 👍🏻. Potato leaves are seasonal and not main stream vegetable. Only the greenest bady leaves are good. The frabic of old leaves are too tough to be eaten. The whole dish are cooked only with green shoots.
The starter and tea are also good!
Conclusion: this restaurant only uses good quality ingredients. Cooking is serious. And overall quality is high. As a restaurant in a hotel, the price is fair. All-in-all satisfied and...
Read moreCame here for the famous char siu rice set. It's served with almost comically large super marbled rib cut. The standard char siu I saw on other tables looked really good too, so I'm not sure if this is a special cut or if they just happen to cut it thicker for the rice bowl set.
The rice bowl is really delicious and the rice is perfectly cooked al dente. The other items in the set are well executed but missable, but you can only get the bowl if you order the whole set...
For some reason the set is only offered in late fall through early winter every year, and must be pre-reserved by phone only. They claim a minimum of 2 orders although you might be able to get it as a single if they're not that busy. Minus a star for all the strange requirements as well as the price for the...
Read moreMy recent visit to Canton Room Restaurant at Gloucester Luk Kwok Hotel left me impressed. The Ecstasy Rice was a standout dish, bursting with flavors. The honey BBQ was exceptionally juicy, fragrant, and tender, with just the right amount of fat. The special soy sauce, infused with chopped red onions, added a delightful aroma and paired perfectly with the fluffy egg.
While the Ecstasy Rice was a hit, I found the other dishes in the set menu to be less remarkable.
The restaurant ambiance was bustling, as expected, and the seating area was somewhat crowded. However, it was still comfortable enough for a pleasant dining experience.
Overall, Canton Room Restaurant offers delicious food, particularly the Ecstasy Rice and honey BBQ, making it a worthwhile dining destination...
