This Cantonese BBQ Sui Mei [燒味] specialty shop/restaurant really delivers above expectations. Arriving early on a weekday for lunch meant getting seated with minimal wait—a great start. Three dishes hit the table: roasted duck leg [燒鴨] with lai fan noodles, char siu [叉燒] with soy sauce chicken [豉油雞] on rice, and roasted goose [燒鵝] on rice.
The roasted duck leg and char siu were the clear standouts—packed with flavor, tender, and perfectly balanced with just the right amount of char and crispiness. The roasted goose, though tasty, had slightly tougher, rougher meat compared to the duck.
The rice were elevated by the incredible Sui Mei sauce and a touch of ginger scallion sauce, making even plain rice irresistible. The lai fan noodles brought their own charm with a rich, flavorful broth that was especially comforting on a chilly winter day.
Overall, this spot delivers a satisfying Cantonese BBQ experience full of flavor, making it well worth a visit. Just a heads-up—there are two queues, one for takeout and another for dine-in, so be sure to get in the right line.
One downside is the air conditioning, which was blasting on a cold winter day. Whether intentional or not, it made the space uncomfortably cold and caused the food to cool down quickly—far from ideal for Sui Mei since it can turn greasy when cold. A small adjustment here would make the experience...
Read moreThis restaurant comes recommended by Michelin and specializes in siu mei, making it a prestigious and renowned restaurant in the district. Its reputation attracts a lot of visitors. While I had attempted to dine at this restaurant before during lunch hours, the extensive wait time of approximately 45 minutes deterred me. However, I finally had the opportunity to visit on a weekday at 3 pm.
I had the Roasted Duck Rice Noodle ($40), which is one of their famous dishes. The portion of duck provided was generous and flawlessly cooked. It was juicy and tender. However, I found the noodle to be somewhat lacking in flavor and portion size.
The restaurant itself is relatively small and cramped. During rush hours, diners are expected to finish their meals within 30 minutes, which can feel rushed. Also, the staff appeared quite busy, which occasionally affected their attentiveness to customers.
Despite these minor drawbacks, I believe this restaurant is definitely worth a visit due to its extremely high value for money. I highly recommend trying their Roasted Duck Rice Noodle as well as exploring their other...
Read moreIntended to visit a burger restaurant in Sai Ying Pun, but it was closed on a Thursday probably because of Ching Ming Festival, which was on the next day. So I got a chance to try out Po Kee in the neighborhood. Po Kee is a traditional local restaurant that sells roasted meat with noodles or rice. I was surprised to learn that Po Kee actually has their own roasting workshop behind the restaurant!
Visiting at 5:30pm wasn’t the best timing, as most of the great things were sold out, including the roasted goose which I wanted to try. Only roasted duck, char siu (roasted pork) and dumplings were left. However, this roasted duck I got as second choice was truly delightful! It was so meaty! Only a few pieces of small bones were found. The duck had a crispy roasted skin which was so so delicious! Meat was tender and juicy. Very delicious indeed. The noodles were equally amazing! The portion was just enough for a light dinner. HKD$33 was definitely went spent for this...
