I'm thrilled to have found this bistro-style eatery, which offers a variety of sandwich options ๐ฅช๐ฅช. They serve classic pastrami sandwiches, including the ๐ข๐ฟ๐ถ๐ด๐ถ๐ป๐ฎ๐น ๐ฅ๐ฒ๐๐ฏ๐ฒ๐ป and the ๐ ๐ผ๐ฟ๐๐โ๐ ๐ฅ๐ฒ๐๐ฏ๐ฒ๐ป 2.0, which has a unique twist. It was love at first bite ๐! The house-smoked pastrami was perfectly balanced, allowing the flavors of the melted Swiss cheese ๐ง , sauerkraut, and Thousand Island dressing to shine. The Mortyโs Reuben 2.0 swaps out the sauerkraut for a delicious Russian coleslaw. . And let's talk about their ๐ฝ๐ผ๐๐๐ถ๐ป๐ฒ ๐โdone Canadian ๐จ๐ฆ style! Thick-cut fries topped with cheese and gravy (trust me, I've encountered many strange interpretations of poutine in Hong Kong, but this is the classic version). . ย ย ย Read moreMorty's is a NYC style delicatessen with two restaurants, one on Jardine House in Causeway Bay and this place here at the Star Street Precinct in Wan Chai. Opening hours 11.30am to 10.30pm daily.
We stopped by back in December 2017 for a large Rueben (HK$158) served with classic poutines (+HK$30) and were happy with the meal. Pastrami was drier than I like. However, it was hearty and tasted pretty good. In fairness, it was as close to what you can find in New York as anything I have found in Hong Kong in the past decade.
Morty's offers other meat sandwiches, sides, a range of salads and others that you'd expect to find in a delicatessen in NYC. Drink list is fine for such a place. Seating area is a modern take and remains clean and nice since the restaurant opened last year. Staff were pleasant and service timely during our lunch.
In the end, don't expect Katz but a fair Hong Kong version of the NYC delicatessen scene at Morty's. Its worth a try if you are craving a Rueben or other big, hearty...
ย ย ย Read more2 stars - I'm from the US so I have a different view of pastrami and reubens than local HKers. The pastrami here is dry and not very flavorful. I ordered the large reuben which was ridiculously expensive (but I wanted to try once) at HKD160. The same sandwich would cost about 6-10 USD (~50-80 HKD) in the US. The fries were very crispy if you like that. I like my fries to be crispy on the outside and soft on the inside with that nice potato flavor. Fries here were overfried or not fresh and therefore was crunchy on the inside and didn't have the fresh potato flavor. Service was fine and I liked that they have sports on. However just keep in mind this place is designed for expats who is willing to shell out a lot of money to get a (mediocre) taste of home just like the mediocre Mexican food...
