Black Sugar Coffee and Lifestyle Review☕
If you want to take a break from the ever-growing list of minimalist cafés with clean, white and "Apple-inspired" interiors, Black Sugar Coffee and Lifestyle, located at Tsim Sha Tsui East, is just the place for you.
Their Hip interior décor ranges from 90s vintage speakers hanging on the wall to modern abstract paintings. Old meets new. Wood meets concrete. Metal meets plants. I personally liked the metallic pendant lamps emanating a warm glow from above.
Everything seems chaotic but orderly... if that makes sense. That's the type of vibe you'll get from this café.
I walked in during lunch hour on a weekday, and the place was pretty chill.
When choosing lunch from cafés, I usually ask for their staff recommendation or specialities. This time, I was looking for a savoury sandwich. The lovely lady at the counter recommended their Tuna Melt Sandwich with Salad and the Roast Beef Sandwich. I was sold by her description of the Tuna Melt Sandwich. Two different types of cheeses on top of tuna? That sounds like a savoury dream.
I was slightly confused when the lady at the counter told me they didn't have a speciality or signature coffee - so I went for a good ol' Caffè Latte.

Nothing beats the aroma of grilled cheese. The crispy sourdough sandwich was just the right temperature, lightly grilled on the sandwich grill to give you that beautiful crunch.
The mixture of the two kinds of cheese overwhelmed the dish - heavy with the cheese and light with the tuna. With the blend of Swiss cheese and cheddar used, you could barely taste any tuna. When I did get a taste of the tuna, it was seasoned generously with black pepper.
The salad was fresh and crisp. Lightly dressed with a citrus dressing.
The dish's highlight was the fluffy yet crispy sourdough, perfectly grilled on the sandwich grill.

My coffee came first. Seeing the struggle as the waitress walked towards my table ever so carefully to keep the latte art neat was amusing. I watched her walk from the counter to my table in mini steps. We exchanged smiles. If you're reading this, you've made my day!
The espresso used in their Caffè Latte is their house blend. Not particularly fruity and not particularly nutty.
Unfortunately, it was not the desired level of richness and creaminess - almost watery. The dose of coffee used needed to be higher, and the ratios might have been mixed up since I upgraded to a large cup.

Heard about Black Sugar for ages, but couldn’t find a chance to pay a visit and then now realised they already opened their 6th cafe, definitely one of the fastest growing cafe brands in HK 🤓
Last week, got an afternoon free time and decided to go to Black Sugar store at TST East to give it a try. Loving the cozy vibes where they have sofa and plants🪴 placed in the cafe, could spend the whole afternoon sitting there chitchating with friends or work from cafe 💻👩🏻💻
Avocado & Egg Toast w/ Salad $98 🥗🥑🥚 ➡️ Surprised by how generous they are on the toppings applied on toast, rich and creamy egg salad with mashed avocado, together with crispy sourdough - great texture, yet feeling like feeling like lacking in some flavours, just add a little bit of salt would be great 👍🏻
Hot Americano $35 ➡️ Nutty, chocolaty, got toffee, brown sugar flavours. Quality coffee priced below $40 per cup are not easy to find nowadays!
💬 Great vibes, good food and coffee at reasonable pricing, cozy environment, will come back or visit other stores for sure! 😆

Read moreBlack Sugar Coffee & Lifestyle is a pretty good local coffee shop at the TST Empire Centre on Mody Road just across from The Royal Garden hotel. Opening hours are 8am to 8pm (weekdays) and 9am to 8pm (weekends).
Seating area is tidy and modern, they have dividers at the tables to help with social distancing needs during the Covid-19 era. Staff were very friendly and service was timely during our visit. Menu includes an expected range of coffee drinks, a few cooked prepared food items as well as breads and sweet counter items.
During a recent visit we had a double espresso which was on the citrusy and bitter end of the spectrum, fairly typical of coffee shops in Hong Kong. Flat White was with an extra shot was more enjoyed. Slice of banana bread was soft, smooth not too sweet - very good. We also had a small cinnamon roll that was heated up, nice cinnamon flavour and roll texture was perfect, again not too sweet nor too much icing - a pretty good cinnamon roll.
Overall, rather happy with our visit to Black Sugar, could see us visiting this coffee shop again...
