We intentionally made Peking Garden our final meal in Hong Kong. I approached the front desk with excitement, only to be immediately met with shock and disappointment. The front desk lady, Miki, was extremely rude and discriminatory.
I greeted her in Mandarin, and she responded in Cantonese. I politely explained that I don’t speak Cantonese, and she suddenly snapped at me in a sarcastic tone, yelling in perfect Mandarin: “CAN’T YOU SEE WE ONLY OPEN AT 11:30am?” If she could speak Mandarin fluently, why insist on replying in Cantonese—except when yelling?
Her attitude and deliberate refusal to accommodate left me shaken. It felt targeted and discriminatory. Other customers in line witnessed the incident, and one local even came forward to explain that her behaviour was a form of racism directed at Mainland Chinese tourists, recognizing how out of line her behaviour was.
Thankfully, a lady with short hair—possibly a senior team member—handled the situation with grace. She apologized sincerely and gave us the best service throughout our meal. Kudos to her for excellent service recovery.
Still, the damage was done. Miki’s behavior was unacceptable and disgraceful. No guest should be made to feel disrespected or racially targeted—especially not in a restaurant that caters to a diverse, international customer base. Racism should never be tolerated, let alone normalized in...
Read moreI had my birthday dinner here and my family and I left feeling full and satisfied. We ordered a set menu which included the Peking Duck which the restaurant is well known for. The duck was delicious- I do not usually eat the skin of the duck as I usually find it extremely fatty, but our duck was crispy and with minimal fat underneath. The duck meat was also well done and flavoursome- added with the sauce, scallion cucumber, and sauce in the pancake wrap it was just A+! The rest of food was also great, particularly the steamed fish.
For future diners who would like to bring a cake to eat in the restaurant, no fee is charged for bringing one unless you would like the staff/restaurant to cut the cake for you (as opposed to you cutting the cake yourself at the table). We thought service was great- the staff were attentive to whenever we were low on tea, our waitress was very happy to help my family take photos and my cake was presented to the table all ready for cutting, candles, matches and knife ready. When we were ready to go, uneaten cake was packed away nicely for us to take home.
If you are eating dinner, try to make a reservation that will have you staying till 8:30pm as one of the chefs of the restaurant puts on a...
Read moreMy wife and I come here for our Peking Duck fix every time we're in Hong Kong. We usually come before 6pm (when they open) and hope for a seat and each time we've managed to be seated.
As it's only two of us and we're here for the duck, we've always ordered a full duck and a soup or vegetable (varies). This time we got the duck and a braised vegetable with bean curd skin.
The vegetable with bean curd skin came first (and fast) and was great esp. as we were hungry. Sadly we then waited 40 minutes for the duck. The upsetting part was that tables who came after us (we were among the first into the restaurant) got their ducks way before us.
Anyway, our duck did come so we're happy at the end. It was as good as we had hoped - the taste and balance of meat and skin/fat is perfect. There is a bamboo steamer of thin translucent pancakes (each separated by a piece of paper) and each of us got our sauce and cucumber/scallions to go into our pancakes.
We've eaten peking duck in quite a few cities (including several famous places in Beijing) but this is still our favourite. We'll be back the next time...
