My husband loves Indian curry, so we went to Chungking Mansion today to have a meal. The restaurant was easy to find, just go up to the first floor and turn left. It's a family-run establishment, and the owner can communicate in English. The place has air conditioning, so you don't have to worry about sweating while eating. This time, we found a vegetarian Indian restaurant that completely changed my perception of vegetarian food.
We ordered four dishes, and every single one was delicious!
The first dish called “Mysore Masala Dosa” it was Spicy Potato Pancakes. It had the aroma of chili and the texture of potato pancakes, served with a spicy sauce. It was definitely a perfect appetizer.
The second dish was Garlic Naan. I usually enjoy Indian naan bread, and having it at an authentic Indian place is a must. The naan was covered in fresh minced garlic, and with each bite, the crispy outer layer and the rich garlic flavor burst in the mouth, leaving a lasting impression.
The third dish called “Punjabi Paneer Tikka” ,it was Indian Grilled Cheese, which was a very special dish. The cheese was grilled to a golden brown, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, complemented by Indian spices. It was cooked on an iron plate, and both the texture and flavor were outstanding. This dish is a great choice for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians.
The last dish called “Davi Puri”, it was Cheesecake Crispy Rice Balls. Initially, I thought it was a savory dish, but it turned out to be a stunning dessert. The cheese balls had a crispy outer layer and a moist, milky interior, combined with the crunchiness of the rice. It was a perfect ending to the meal.
We also ordered a glass of Lime Soda and a glass of Banana Lassi. The Lime Soda was very refreshing with a hint of sourness, making it an excellent choice to beat the heat. The Banana Lassi had a rich and sweet taste, perfectly satisfying the dessert cravings after the meal.
Overall, this vegetarian Indian restaurant left a deep impression on me. It showed me that Indian cuisine is not just about chicken curry; vegetarian dishes can also be incredibly delicious. Each dish showcased the unique flavors and spices of India. If you love Indian food or want to try vegetarian options, I highly recommend...
Read moreSaravana – Pure Vegetarian in Hong Kong offers a wide variety of dishes that an average Indian vegetarian would expect, which is definitely a plus given the limited vegetarian options available in the city. However, this broad menu seems to have come at the cost of quality.
While the prices are quite high, the taste of the food was only average and didn’t stand out. The restaurant’s ambiance felt cramped and cluttered, more like a small, busy plaza eatery back in India rather than a comfortable dining spot you’d expect in Hong Kong. This, combined with just decent service, made the overall experience underwhelming.
It feels like Saravana is trying to cater to every vegetarian craving on one menu but may be stretching themselves too thin, which affects their focus on quality. If you’re in Hong Kong and craving Indian vegetarian food, it might serve as a convenient option, but I’d recommend exploring alternatives if you want a better...
Read moreI hope I am thanking the correct restaurant! A handsome gentleman in a red turban not only allowed me to purchase half a portion of his oh-so-delicious carrot sweet (gujar halwa) --- he then refused payment after telling me his sister went to the Chennai university where I taught briefly. Chungking Mansions has fascinated me since 1978 & remains a colorful bouquet of many cultures ... but it is NOT known for refusing money from US tourists! His kindness was sweeter than the candy, and his business deserves great success. Please try the carrot sweet -- it tastes rich with milk & butter, the real thing in a world of cheaper ingredients. (If you try to make it, prepare for hours of stirring until milk is absorbed into a stiff paste -- I tried once, but never again!) May good luck match his quality &...
