There were 3 tables in total and it was not crowded at all. Me and my friend came in, we just finished shopping so we had some stuff with us, then we sat in a table that can fit 4 people. The staff with black t-shirt and pony tail yelled at us and she told us with a very rude attitude “you cannot sit there, that’s table for 4, not for 2”. Then we moved as “instructed” by the rude staff. I was not feeling comfortable to stay after being yelled by the staff, and I just remember that I can use my ZA card for buy 1 get 1. I’ve been a few times to Urban Coffee in CWB, but never in this branch. So me and my friend just decided to use the buy 1 get 1 promo and takeaway the coffee instead. Better than sit down there paying for a full price coffee and at the end they charged 10% service charge. Why do I need to pay 10% service charge if the staff was really rude and already yelled at us (well thanks to that actually, so we can decide to get buy 1 get 1 earlier).

I asked the male staff to confirm if we can get buy 1 get 1 promo, and after I ordered my coffee. The rude female staff who took order. And I said I wanted ICE Caramel Latte and Mocha Latte (for this one, I didn’t specify if I wanted hot or ice but my friend said hot at the end). But she kept getting my order wrong, she repeat my order as hot LATTE and hot Mocha, and I repeat, ICE Caramel Latte and HOT Mocha. Then she repeat again, HOT Caramel Latte and HOT Mocha. And ridiculously, she’s the one who gave me attitude while I kept repeating my orders 3 times for her to get it right. She then said “tsk” to me as if I annoyed her, while she’s the one who annoyed me with her rude attitude and as she kept making mistake and at the end I need to yell back “I SAID ICE Caramel Latte”.

Seriously, why you need to keep the table for 4 people when the coffee shop is almost empty? And even though you really need the table, can you just politely said to the customer in advance that if 4 people come, they’ll need to move us? I work in a service industry / customer service as well but apparently I can’t expect basic manner from the staff in this coffee shop.

Other than that, their coffee actually just ordinary. And because of this experience, I wouldn’t even bother to come to their other branch anymore. I always choose Arabica, NOC or Omotesando for coffee in HK. I should just choose other coffee shop rather than getting this rude treatment from their staff and paying for basic coffee while I could get a better quality one in the other...

❗️WARNING❗️I just had lunch at this establishment and after a good cappuccino, a decent mango salad and some fries with a delicious truffle mayonnaise, I decided to order the "Yuzu Creme brûlée" for dessert. Once I digged my spoon into it, I realised, that there is a "white mold" patch approximately 1.5cm in diameter with a green centre on the surface.( in my laboratory it takes at least 3 days at 28 degrees Celsius to grow a mold patch like that)

So I told the waiter to remove it, which he did. As a food scientist with a background in the hospitality industry, I do take a great interest in how a place deals with this situation... And guess what happened. The waiter discussed the issue with his colleague or manager who looked at the dessert and laughed about it. And sent the waiter back with another "Yuzu Creme brûlée" from the same charge. 😡I politely declined and ordered the bill. At the counter, I asked the waiter, if he really wants to charge me for lunch after this incident. And he replied he has to, but they took the dessert and the cappuccino of the bill. In Europe, I would have just walked out of this place without paying... but being a tourist in a foreign country, I did pay my deed and proceeded the correct way, by reporting this case to the Hong Kong Hygiene and Food Safety department! I hope they keep a close eye on them and inspect the kitchen and especially the refrigeration systems. I very much suspect, that the basic food and hygiene standards in the kitchen of the "Urban coffee roasters" are not met. Moreover, the complaint handling of such an awkward situation was in my opinion...
