An Honest Take on Omakase at Nana, Bogotá
As someone who deeply appreciates Japanese cuisine and has explored omakase experiences in different parts of the world, I was excited to try Nana in Bogotá. The restaurant itself is beautifully designed, with an intimate atmosphere that sets the stage for what should be an exceptional dining experience. And in many ways, it was—but not without a few disappointments.
The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the chef, who was incredibly welcoming and took the time to explain each dish in detail, answering all our questions with genuine passion and knowledge. His craftsmanship was evident in every piece of sushi, with fresh, high-quality ingredients and well-balanced flavors that showcased traditional Japanese techniques with subtle creative twists.
However, the service from the waitstaff fell short. From the moment we sat down, it felt like their main priority was to upsell us on the most expensive menu options rather than guide us toward the best experience. When we asked if we could order individual items from the menu, our waiter flatly told us that it wasn’t possible. This was disappointing, as I had really been looking forward to trying ikura (salmon roe), but apparently, it couldn’t be ordered separately. It left me feeling like the experience was more rigid than it needed to be, especially considering the price point.
In the end, the food was excellent, and the chef’s hospitality made the evening enjoyable. But the overly sales-driven approach from the service team took away from what should have been a more personal and immersive omakase experience. If Nana refines its service approach to focus more on hospitality rather than upselling, it has the potential to be a top-tier sushi...
Read moreWhat an experience at NANA! I am always looking for amazing experiences and NANA did not disappoint. Please note you do need to make reservations as it’s a small restaurant.
NANA is a Japanese experience. It is not just sushi but many different types of small dishes. You choose your experience and off to the races you go. I will say this do not go in a rush. Eat slow and enjoy what you are experiencing, that is so important to get the full experience and your moneys worth. The seating area is small the chefs are right there so you get to see exactly how they are preparing each dish. Of course they also interact with you and you can ask them questions.
So we had the B experience which has a lot different types of tuna. I have all these types before and I will say everything was fresh and exactly what I expected.
They had several other items and one thing that stands out is the sea urchin. I have had sea urchin raw before, but this was my first time having it cooked. Wow I was blown away with how it was prepared, so delicious. Everything we had was top quality.
So let’s go to the staff and like the food amazing. One advantage of having a small restaurant is everything is personal and fast which I would expect for this high end of a restaurant.
Next the price, yes it is pricey and I would not consider this cheap by any means. That being said I think it is well worth it to at least try once. Can you find cheaper in the city, yes. However the quality, attentiveness by the staff and overall experience you won’t find at those places typically.
I really do highly recommend NANA for the food the experience and amazing staff. It’s worth at least...
Read moreFinally, a real japanese experience!
Nana is all about the experience. The chef and the omakase journey transport you to a small piece of Japan (I've been there, so I can attest to its authenticity).
Don't expect a huge amount of food; this is not about volume but about quality, presentation, and interaction with the chef. Some people complain about not being full, but this is not how authentic Japanese dining works.
Don't expect a lot of sauces on your nigiri and other delicacies the chef presents to you, all comes with the perfect amounts of sauces to taste the fish and real flavours of the nigiris. This is not like other American-based sushi places, so be aware and set your expectations accordingly.
The service is amazing; the chef and all the staff understand the importance of this aspect of the omakase experience. They offer three variations of their omakase menu: some include only cold dishes, others feature a mix of hot plates, nigiri, and special dishes.
The price is high per person, but believe me when I say this is one of the few places where you can truly experience real sushi omakase.
Thanks to the chef Koji and his team. I wish you many years of...
