⭐️ Disappointing Birthday Experience – Not Michelin-Worthy
As someone who truly appreciates fine dining and frequently seeks out Michelin-rated restaurants, I had high hopes for Zrno Soli while celebrating my birthday in Split. Unfortunately, this turned out to be one of the worst dining experiences I’ve ever had at a so-called Michelin-recognized establishment.
From the start, the service fell flat. We requested a table by the water for the view, only to be told those tables were already reserved. The terrace was configured so that only four parties had access to the waterfront seats, while other diners—like us—were placed toward the back. When I mentioned that I was also celebrating a special occasion (my birthday), the waiter offered no acknowledgment or attempt to accommodate, even though this was shared in advance during the reservation process.
Once seated, we reviewed the menu and noticed that the prices for the lobsters had been scratched out and reversed, with no clear explanation. I inquired about the white fish options, expecting the kind of storytelling and ingredient knowledge typical of Michelin-level service. Instead, I was told to look at the fish tank myself. There, I found fish with cloudy eyes (a clear red flag for freshness), and all of the seafood was cramped into one space—including just one red and one blue lobster. When I asked about the type of white fish, the waiter couldn't tell me. Even more concerning, when I asked about the weight of the lobster (which is priced per kilogram), he simply weighed it in his hand.
Meanwhile, my dinner companion, a pescatarian—a detail I included in our reservation—sought guidance on the menu. The waiter returned moments later to say the lobsters I had just been examining were now sold to the next table. That was the final straw.
We asked for the check and left without ordering anything. The experience was not only disorganized and dismissive, but it completely lacked the level of knowledge, hospitality, and attention to detail that one expects from a Michelin-affiliated restaurant.
Thankfully, we found another restaurant that same evening, where the staff, food, and service were exceptional—and I was able to salvage what turned into a truly memorable birthday dinner elsewhere.
I do not recommend Zrno Soli. This restaurant may have once earned accolades, but it is clearly coasting on...
Read moreI am not a food critic but I am a well travelled person living in London who eats out more frequently than cooks himself. It's not unusual for me to me to pay a couple of hundreds for a dinner so I have solid background for comparison.
Quick summary - don't go, overpriced food with mediocre service.
But google wants tree marks, so be it.
Food. Bread and soup was actually ok. Selection of fish was quite good, lobster managed to survive till dark. But, after long wait I could not feel taste of the fish (95eur per kilo) because grilled vegetables I ordered as a side, arrived a bit earlier than the rest of my main, was so bitter (most likely because of oil used) so I can still fill bitter taste in my mouth even after an hour and having a couple of sweet drinks. Also, "a little bit of everything" that came with 33eur tag was quite a disappointment. In my humble opinion, even for half the money I would still say it's overpriced.
Service. My partner had her glass of wine and for the rest of the dinner enjoyed the view of an empty glass in front of her. Nobody asked if it was any good or she wants more. I had a pleasure myself to sit in front of empty soup plate for at least half an hour. It was three of us, and we wanted to share starters, but was only given only two empty plates. Although I can come up with a rational explanation it felt super wired.
Atmosphere. I grew up in USSR and the interior brought my childhood memories to life. It probably was fashionable in 1985. Toilet ... I have seen better ones at train stations in rural areas in...
