Whenever I go to a different country, I always love trying their beers and visiting their breweries. During my visit to Prague, my research showed me that Pilsner Urquell was a popular one. I'd had it a few times in the states before, so I was interested in learning more about the history and trying some brews during my trip.
Here's the reason behind the two stars:
Pros:
You get to see the bottling line in action They take you through their cellars, which was pretty cool to see. It was my first experience in a beer cellar.
Cons:
The brewery is DUMB far. If you do not have a car, there is no easy way to get there from Prague. My friend and I had not rented a car and figured out the public transportation but it was super inconvenient. We took an Uber to a train station that's 20 minutes outside of Prague, to hop on an hour-long bus that only comes at the top of each hour. If you miss the bus, then you're SOL because your ticket only works for the time that you purchased. Then, we walked about 10 minutes from the bus stop in Plzen to the brewery. The tour is 120 minutes long. A bit too lengthy, IMO for a brewery tour. You only get one tasting of the beer - which is fine, but the brewery doesn't even offer anything on tap, if you wanted to buy a drink while waiting for the tour to start. If you want to drink more beyond the tasting, you'd have to go to the restaurant across the street.
This was probably one of the worst brewery tours I have been on in life. At least I was able to get a student discount on the ticket. You should definitely buy the tickets ahead of time online if you're planning to come (but I don't think you should - unless you have a car and have an ample amount of time to kill).
Tip - there are free lockers by the entrance, but you'll want to keep your coats if you're visiting during the winter time - a lot of the tour requires going in and out...
Read moreWe got one day trip to Pilsen, a small city in Czech Republic to take the Pilsner Urquell Brewery tour, that Serge, who is a beer lover, discovery after some research. The access to the city and Pilsner factory is easy by train from Prague city and takes around one hour and few minutes walking distance from the train station. The tickets were not expensive, it was around $12cad for each and we don’t remember 100% but we are almost 95% sure we paid by Credit Card. The tour walk that lasts around 1h20 minutes begins with an explanation of the history of the Brewery, then we have an overview of the factory and how the beer is made, and we go to a tunnel where the barrels of beer are stored and we can taste, what for Serge was the best part. Everything was very organized and it is super modern. The tours can be in different languages, we did in English and looks like you can reserve and buy tickets on line, but we didn’t know exactly what time we should get there so we bought the tickets just when we arrived there.
At the end of the tour you also can walk around and do some shopping in the beer and souvenirs store they have just next to the factory.

Read moreHighly recommend anyone visiting the Pilsner Urquell Brewery to book a tour (and book the tour in advance as it can fill up quick). They offer tours in Czech, German, and English. I took the English Tour and it was amazing.
Pilsner Beer is only brewed in this location and shipped worldwide. The beer was first introduced in 1842.
Our tour guide was amazing. Very knowledgeable and friendly.
The tour includes: The History of the Brewery, A short film on the history of the brewery, tour of the bottling plant, tour of the brewing area, tour of the old tunnels where beer was stored. They had a massive room under ground where the ice was stored to keep the storage facilities cold for the stored beer. Best part of all: A Tasting of Freshly brewed Pilsner Urquell Beer.
The Visitors Center is amazing. I really enjoyed the Pilsner Beer Motorcycle. Located here is a glass that Emperor Franz Josef used when he would visit the brewery. Amazing history.
They have an amazing Souvenir Store at the brewery. Huge selection of merchandise to take home as a reminder of your visit. Friendly and helpful service.
Highly recommend visiting the Pilsner Urquell Brewery. Great Experience. It also helps that this is where one of the best beers in the world (my opinion) is brewed and shipped all...
