When this restaurant was first announced, I couldn’t wait. Everything about it looked perfect – and the guy running the taco station was supposed to be from Tijuana. I mean, could it get any better?
But when they finally opened and I saw the first photos on social media, my excitement started to fade. I didn’t see much that looked “Mexican” to me. Still, I figured we had to give it a try – though my expectations were already pretty low.
After visiting, I can honestly say that, unfortunately, this place shares nothing with Mexico other than the name. To be honest, I don’t even understand why it’s called a Mexican restaurant.
Looking for one of the most traditional Mexican soups – sopa de tortilla? No luck. Instead, you’ll get a basic chicken broth with a fancy name, caldo de pollo, something you can easily find in any Czech pub. The only difference is that here, they’ll throw in a few “nachos” and a lime on the side.
Been to Yucatán and craving a sopa de lima? Forget it.
They offer six kinds of tacos, but the tortillas are so small that it’s almost impossible to eat them by hand – the filling either falls out, or the soggy tortilla breaks apart… and I doubt anyone eats sushi with a fork, right? But good for instagram.
On top of that, the taco flavors are pretty plain. The one with chorizo actually reminded me more of mashed-up “francouzske brambory” on a tortilla than anything remotely Mexican. If you’re hoping for classics like al pastor, suadero, or cochinita pibil, you’ll be disappointed.
Other than tacos, the only “mexican” things on the menu are aguachiles and quesadillas, which you can basically find anywhere these days. Want more real Mexican dishes like enchiladas, tostadas, mole, or polcanes? Forget it.
To be fair, the staff took the feedback quite well – they did ask if everything was okay. The service is friendly, the space is nice, the desserts are decent, and the ceviche was actually pretty good… but none of those are reasons I’d come back again.
I wanted to give it at least 3 stars to be fair, but with what they currently offer, I just don’t have a reason to return – not unless the menu gets a...
Read moreIt was our first time at Mexická, and I was immediately struck by how un-Czech the place seemed - I felt like I'd apparated to Las Vegas (I don't like Las Vegas)
Servers were on us the second we sat down to get drink orders and to get us to order some chips and salsa/guacamole. We managed to delay after one attempt, but on our second attempt, I don't think our waitress would have accepted 'we're not ready yet' as an answer. The drinks were good, not great, and though I ordered a non-alcoholic cocktail, I received an alcoholic one. Rather than apologizing, the server asked 'is someone at the table going to drink it?' Fortunately someone wanted it, otherwise I really got the impression that the server would have been pissed off.
The mains (tacos, enchiladas, quesadillas) were all very good by Czexican standards, though no better than other places I've been to in town. The desserts were good, too, and the pineapple dessert with pina colada ice cream was excellent.
Unfortunately, however good the food was, the service was terrible. We were constantly asked to order more drinks, and our server seemed genuinely annoyed at us when we didn't order them. In addition to the server, the manager also came by several times to push for more drinks. When it was clear we weren't going to get any more drinks, our server slapped the bill on the table and she made it clear we were welcome to go. Our na shledanous went unanswered as we passed our server and her colleagues on the way out.
Perhaps the vibe is different on a weekday or for lunch, but I don't think we'll be going back to find out. This place isn't worth...
Read moreWe recently visited this restaurant without a reservation, and the staff was accommodating enough to find us a table promptly. The place is quite spacious and boasts a fabulous ambiance, making for a pleasant dining atmosphere. The service was efficient and friendly, and we appreciated the unique concept of the kitchen sending out dishes as they were ready.
We tried the tacos, which were flavorful and enjoyable. However, the tortillas were notably small (perhaps the smallest we've encountered for tacos). The guacamole and nachos stood out positively as well, reminiscent of authentic Mexican flavors.
The ceviche, on the other hand, didn't meet our expectations. While the fish was fresh, the dish lacked the vibrant flavors typical of a traditional Peruvian ceviche. The leche de tigre was watery and lacked the zesty punch that usually characterizes it - the flavours were missing, and had no spiciness. Additionally, the inclusion of salad and canned corn felt out of place and detracted from the authenticity of the dish.
We also ordered the rib-eye steak, which was tender but underseasoned, missing the depth of flavor. The Padrón peppers were under-grilled, lacking the characteristic charred skin that enhances their flavor and texture.
Overall, the restaurant has great potential. It offers a delightful setting and commendable service; they just need to work a bit more on the food to match the high standards set by the ambiance and service. We see potential here and hope to see improvements...
