I had dinner here a rootbeer float (which how can you go wrong with one of those, it was fine) and a brisket. ...The brisket was not it and felt terribly overpriced for the quality it was. As a Canadian very well versed in barbecue, I had to ask the waitress if it was fresh or frozen. I needed some kind of explanation of why it tasted so off. My best description is a little old out of the freezer meat vibe. I know brisket takes alot of work, but this does not do justice to brisket. I really wanted to like it. The coleslaw accompanying it was also not good so i couldn't eat it. The only reason I ate a significant part of it was because I spent 289 kroners on it! That is around 60 Canadian Dollars. I wanted to finish it but I just couldnt because I felt so unwell after a moment trying to power through it.
I had wanted to come to this place for so long since I first came across it months ago. Felt like a good opportunity to come try. Everyone has rave reviews about breakfast so that must be good, but this dinner was not good and to be 289kr !? I felt hungry, nauseous, and disappointed when I left.
I gave 2 stars because I was teetering on 1 or 2. And I went with 2 for now... Plus the service was nice. I can't stress how nice the lady was at the front. The friendly demeanor made me feel welcome when I came in. Just the environment didn't feel the cleanest. A sticky tabletop at the side bar. I like the possibilities this place could have, but it wasn't the best I feel it could be. I didn't know what to do in the situation because 1 look and 1 bite was enough to know ot wasn't going to be good. I recommend changing your brisket, not having it at all, OR lowering the price significantly. You could get away charging 200 kr for this, but 289 was painful. Especially because 289 kr in Canadian Brisket standards would give you top knotch rub, freshness, juiciness, good skin rub.
UPDATE 1: increased from a 2 to 3 for customer service and their response to constructive criticism being well received. I appreciated them taking the time to look into my concern seriously and even consult their meat vendor and look into their practices. I am going to come in soon to try brunch with a friend and open to adjusting rating in consideration of it all. But it their customer service online and offline seems...
Read moreOverall, a bit of a mixed bag. The “no substitutions” policy is annoying, particularly if you want, for instance, to replace bacon with veggie sausages. In this case, you have no option but to order something else or to order a side of sausages and then (assuming you don’t eat bacon) give it to someone else. The veggie sausages were the most disappointing item of all—they were clearly Naturli frozen hot dogs that you can buy in most supermarkets. These were cut in half and then served as “breakfast sausages”—as any American can attest, hot dogs are not the same thing at all as breakfast sausages. The pancakes were fantastic. The eggs Benedict were also great. The fried eggs that came with my breakfast were totally overcooked, which is surprising and disappointing—one almost has to make a conscious effort to overcook a fried egg! The hash browns were ok, though they were really just shredded potatoes that had been fried together. Not seasoned, not crispy, and not hot—they were really just ok in the sense that it’s hard to make a potato not taste pretty good. The service was the worst aspect of the whole experience though. The restaurant was not particularly busy, but our table of two was completely overlooked. It took about 10 minutes for them to take our drink order, and then about 25 for the drinks to arrive (a coffee and a lemonade). The other two nearby tables that had ordered at the same time as us received their drinks promptly, such that they already had food by the time we got our drinks. When the food came much of mine was cold (the overcooked eggs, the ‘hash browns’ and the terrific pancakes). The prices are pretty reasonable for Copenhagen, and the decor is quite nice (in the sense that tacky midwestern diner is the goal, it really is quite nice)! The bathrooms, on the other hand, are like something out of a horror movie. As stated at the start, really...

We loved the Midwestern Diner. It's a very cute diner that vibes more southern or rural than Midwestern but has a fun mix of Midwestern and Mideastern plates from home.
We had the chicken & waffles as an appetizer which tasted like a celebration of Maxine's chicken & waffles - a famous Indianapolis plate that has recently crept through the rest of the midwest from the Indiana/Kentucky region. The diner offered a delicious take on this plate.
Our main course was a couple of their delicious cheeseburgers and sweet potato fries (The bacon jam burger and the truffle burger). We enjoyed the great cuts of beef and perfectly crisp medium cut sweet potato fries.
For dessert, the pumpkin pie was great! I'm biased because I love pumpkin everything this time of year. However, the cheesecake tasted a bit foreign to me but perhaps it's more to do with Copenhagen's take on cheesecake. It was too soft to be what we serve in the US as cheesecake which is firm and American cream cheese based. Still overall we'd try more desserts from here.
Staff was great and had very convincing flat Midwestern accents - with the beloved brand of welcoming & friendly that you only get from the Midwest.
Final take- As a true Midwestern from Chicagoland I loved the diner and I'll be back next time I'm in Copenhagen for a...
