On our 5 day sojourn in Cairo we had become bored with the standard rice and kebab meal at every restaurant. Our guide, a young man named Ashraf, guided us to this restaurant, when we told him that we wanted an authentic Egyptian meal, apart from this. According to him, the origin of this restaurant was actually a handcart. The owner, was the father of young Tarek. Since "Abou" means father, so Abou Tarek, is father of Tarek. Having gained popularity, he expanded and hence this restaurant. There were numerous pictures of celebrities enjoying a meal here. This four storied restaurant is usually very crowded, filled with locals and tourists alike, and during peak times you may need to wait for a table. Koshary is their main dish. It is available in 3 sizes and is cheap, tasty and fills you up. It is also totally vegetarian, Made of noodles, chickpeas, homemade tomato sauce, fried onions, chilli paste and lemons. They are all served separately and the waiter assembled it with a flourish, right at our table. It was yummy and served hot, so we enjoyed the meal. Many may argue that it is not very good in comparison to other places, but as a tourist, I was delighted with my meal. The decor is loud, a trifle garish, with colorful lights, fountains and aquariums, but then it makes no pretensions. Unfortunately, the washrooms are dirty and they do need to look into this.

Abou Tarek came highly recommended by a local Egyptian friend to experience their national dish known as Koshari. It is vegetarian and involves ingredients being served individually and you add as much of what you need to make your plate. The basics of which include spice, vinegar, tomato sauce - all of which gets added as per your need to a bed of small macaroni/vermicelli and chickpeas. If you are a first timer to Abu Tarek, the staff is kind enough to show you how its done and I have a video for you to see just how fun it was! The flavour of the Koshari was outstanding and super fresh. They come in various sizes and guess what else? The restaurant doesn't serve anything else! Only Koshari in different sizes. The ambience tells its age and is in the really busy auto parts hub of Old Cairo but well worth the effort. Once inside you see the kitchen and the multiple staff packing and preparing hundreds of koshari portions for those dining in and those doing takeaway/delivery. An absolute icon of a restaurant and highly recommended given we tried Koshari at other points of our journey and none of them stood up to the quality and freshness of Abu Tarek!

Koshary Abou Tarek is a true gem in the heart of Cairo and a must-visit for anyone seeking an authentic Egyptian dining experience. This iconic restaurant serves the best koshary in town, a hearty and delicious mix of rice, lentils, pasta, chickpeas, and crispy fried onions, topped with a rich tomato sauce and tangy garlic vinegar. The flavors are simply outstanding, perfectly balanced, and packed with a taste of Egypt in every bite. The portion sizes are generous, and the food is always fresh and served piping hot. Despite its popularity and the constant buzz, the service is efficient, and the staff are friendly and accommodating. The atmosphere at Koshary Abou Tarek is lively and bustling, offering a true local vibe. The restaurant is clean, well-maintained, and proudly displays its rich history, making it more than just a meal but a cultural experience. Whether you’re a tourist exploring Cairo or a local craving comfort food, Koshary Abou Tarek never disappoints. It’s affordable, authentic, and absolutely delicious. Highly recommended!

On the second day of our visit our private tour guide offered us the opportunity to try a more local cuisine. I am so happy that she did, the food here was a true highlight of the entire holiday, and i will certainly try and replicate the dish at home. A mixture of rice, small pasta, and spaghetti, topped with lentils and chickpeas, tomato sauce, garlic vinegar (i dont like vinegar dont worry it really does add to the meal), squeezed lime, chilli sauce, and dried onion. It might sound like a bizarre combination but it really is one of the best meals ive ever had, insanely good. The Egyptian lemonade was a super accompaniment. The restaurant and takeaway counter is so busy they can barely cook the food quick enough, the place is very popular, but we did not have to wait long. There is only one toilet, so expect to queue, and it was filthy.

Absolutely delicious! Highly recommended!! You must try this and definitely should go there if you visit Cairo. Koshary was amazing and very generous portion. The waiter helped us with seasoning the koshary and with how to eat the soup that actually comes inside a large brown bread. We also had a dessert which was creamy rice with milk topped with cinnamon, children loved it! adults too. We had to order two more 🤣 all very good and very healthy too. Not meat here, vegetarians around, that's the place to visit. Staff speak English and make you feel very welcome! Very traditional, yet delicious dish. Was a Big surprise for us, much more than just pasta or rice, a real experience! I do not even mention the very cheap prices..just go and try, you'll love it.
