I loved the atmosphere. Simple old town white wall design with some random pictures and Estonian theme.
The stuff is lovely and helpful. They recommend if you ask and also know their kitchen and what is on the menu and how it is done.
The first impression was not so great though- they had the menus in inglish, finnish and russian. Not Estonian. But that's OK. I understand them all but my first thought was the target group of this restaurant. Specially when thinking about the locaiton.
The menu selection is quite impressive. They have Estonian traditional-ish food with a twist and you can also find some influence from European kitchen.
For appetizer I ordered herring tartare with quail egg and wife ordered Estonian hummus selection. I would suggest the tartare. It was nice, with a fresh taste of herring. Really awesome dish. The hummus was a bit below average. I understand what they are trying to do but it is not for my taste. One of the third hummus was traditionalish but others were in my opinion too desperate to change something.
For main course I ordered rack of lamb and wife a duck breast. Both are complicated yet humble dishes. Lamb I ordered medium and my wife likes well done meat. I love that lamb came with generous amount of vegetables but the lamb itself was quite average or even below. I love the taste of the lamb but it could be whatever meat and it was dry even for medium. The duck was better but still, considering the price, average. I would not recommend both.
For dessert we both ordered thubarb and marzipan cake. It was something different I ever got. Overall.. I think the Icecream was the best feature about the appetizer.
So, overall, I would not recommend this place. We had a discussion about the meal and considering the location it might be the best place in Raekoja Plats, but as there is Peppersack and Olde Hansa around the corner with more impressive atmosphere I would recommend those places. And cosidering the food and price, my wife said Mmuah has better duck with much lower price. And I know several places in Tallinn offering better duck and lamb for also...

Nestled right on Tallinn’s historic Town Hall Square, Kaerajaan beckons with its vibrant charm. The dining room, adorned in colorful traditional motifs, sets the stage for an unforgettable culinary journey.
Our adventure began with an unexpected twist: Estonian sushi crafted from wholesome barley instead of the usual rice. The result? A delightful fusion of flavors that left our taste buds dancing.
But the real star of the show was the Snack Platter for Two. Picture this: a rustic wooden board laden with an array of tempting appetizers. From crispy cheese balls (with a satisfying crunch and a hint of saltiness) to garlic-infused rye bread strips, each bite was a revelation. Shrimp tempura made a surprise appearance (not exactly Estonian, but oh-so-tasty), while battered chicken nuggets reminded us of carefree childhood days.
And then there were the breaded Baltic herrings—served cold, their delicate flavor a nod to Estonian shores. Accompanied by two local cheeses, olives, pickles, and creamy dipping sauces, this platter was a symphony of textures and tastes.
While some items played it safe, the cheese balls and Baltic herring stole the spotlight. Simple yet satisfying, they transported us to the heart of Estonian cuisine.
Service? Warm and welcoming. Prices? Surprisingly reasonable for such a prime location. Kaerajaan, where tradition meets innovation, invites you to savor the best...
