#blacklivesmatter #stopasianhate When the waitresses are the Karens: Is NOP a racist place?
I’m deeply disappointed by the recent experience I had at NOP restaurant, and I feel compelled to share my concerns with the community not in Estonian, but in English .
As an individual who has frequented this establishment several times in the past, I have never encountered any issues. However, my most recent visit has left me questioning the level of covert racism at this place.
During this visit, I had the unfortunate experience of bringing a group of Tallinn University's expat visitors, which included individuals from diverse backgrounds, including Black and Asian guests.
It became apparent that the treatment we received was far from what I had come to expect from NOP with white people groups.
Firstly, upon bringing my guests to the restaurant, I was astonished to witness the thin, short blond-haired white lady expressing dissatisfaction with our presence. It was disheartening to note that this was the first time I had ever faced any complaints about guests I had brought in the past, all of whom were white.
Secondly, when it started raining, I politely asked the chubby long black-haired waitress with spiky eyebrows for a place inside the restaurant for our group. She denied us entry and astonishingly blamed me for choosing the outside area. This statement was bizarre, as I had personally seen tables put together inside the restaurant before. Her refusal to accommodate us indoors was disconcerting and added to our discomfort.
Thirdly, our experience with the short blond-haired waitress took a further nosedive when she handled our order for extra cakes and cookies. We took back our 50 euros tip because of that. She displayed a sarcastic smile while asking those who had ordered extras to wait the other tables for payment, so only after that we (I) could get the extras . It made no sense.
This discriminatory treatment made us feel like second-class customers, unworthy of receiving the same level of service as others.
What was even more distressing was witnessing her unhygienic behavior when it was my turn to take my extras. She handled money and bills before touching a cake with her bare hands when placing them into a small box.
Such unprofessional conduct is unacceptable and raises serious concerns about the restaurant's hygiene standards.
I must emphasize that our group consisted of educated, quiet, and super polite students and researchers, who deserved to be treated with respect and fairness.
The disdain we experienced was unprovoked and unjustifiable, leaving us feeling unwelcome and hurt.
It is crucial for establishments like NOP to create a welcoming environment for all customers, regardless of their background.
Addressing these issues is vital to ensure that NOP becomes a place that promotes inclusivity, respect, and fairness for everyone.
I urge NOP to take immediate action to address these concerns and ensure that such incidents are not repeated in the future. Until I see genuine efforts to rectify these issues, I cannot recommend this restaurant to others anymore, opposite to what I’ve done on the past.
As a society, we must stand together against racism and discrimination, and I hope that this review serves as a wake-up call for positive...
Read moreI was so excited about coming to this cafe, but ended up leaving because a waitress was so incredibly rude. I can’t even believe it. I went up one waitress to order and she told me to go to another counter to be seated. So I did, and the waitress there was settling the bill of a couple. As I waited, another group came in, said something to her, and they sat down.
After she’d finished with the couple, she then went to serve water to the group and completely ignored my presence. She didn’t acknowledge me at all even though I’m right in front (so she couldn’t have missed me). I thought that was a bit odd but gave the benefit of the doubt because maybe they had a prior reservation. She then returned to the counter and again completely ignores me even though it’s very clear I’m waiting. She then serves two other tables - one just water and the other she takes their order. She had to pass me again to do so and just looked me in the eye blankly and coldly. I honestly feel that she purposely ignored me. She then returned to the counter and started doing something else. By this point I know I’m not going to be served for some reason, so decide to leave.
I would be more forgiving if she had said something like “can you give me a couple of minutes”. But she didn’t at all. I ended up telling the original waitress who apologised on for behalf, but it obviously isn’t that waitress’ fault as she was was nice. It’s a shame that I couldn’t try this restaurant as it was on my “must-eat” list, but I’m not going to aimlessly wait when it’s clear that the waitress is being rude for no reason.
I am happy to wait to be seated - that’s not the problem. The problem is that she purposely ignored me and made me feel as if I didn’t belong. (I visited on...
Read moreMy first and last time in there sadly. I was very excited about trying their healthy meals, but sadly experience was ruined by a waitress who let our food that was sitting in the counter in front of our noses for 15min go cold. She walked past these foods many times and was talking to the chefs but acted like the foods were not there, at one point we thought that we are gonna get up and get our food ourselves because the waitress didn’t even acknowledge us. Finally we got our food - we told the waitress it was sitting there for 15min, was cold and how it’s possible you couldn’t deliver it to the table next to the counter where the chefs put the meals that are ready even if u were walking past us many times?? It was very funny service for us but when a family of 6 sat to the table next to us and also after 15-20 minutes the same waiter didn’t acknowledge them and the woman in the table started yelling “helloo??” to the waiter because obviously they were very mad already and the waitress turned to them and gave them an ugly look and said very arrogantly and even angrily “there’s only one of me” we were really suprised. I also work in restaurant business and I would NEVER let my workers talk to someone like that, not an appropriate way to speak with clients. I don’t think I have never seen service like this anywhere in Tallinn before.
Leaving that aside I ordered vegetable bowl with fried cheese and it was very very over seasoned. The fresh juice was good and the cake was okay. I also tried my friends eggs with salmon and it was also okay but not the best because it...
