Cafe-restaurant Werner — Restaurant in Tartu linn

This review is for the restaurant, not the cafe (the cafe is invariably excellent). Took a team of colleagues to lunch at the restaurant upstairs, for the daily lunch special. It was the fried chicken ball. With no herbs or spices but absurdly oversalted, it's a health hazard. Also, it's an insult to offer bread without butter - this is the first place in Tartu I've encountered this! I don't understand why the restaurant was crowded except to hypithesize that too many Estonians don't have a clue what good food is. There are many Asian restaurants in Tartu, among others, where the lunch specials are far tastier, the same price (actually, usually a little less), and not a risk to the diner's health. I wanted to give my opinion on this to the manager (named Liis, evidently) who was "too busy" to spare a moment to see me. Definitely will not...

We visited earlier in the day and we were so happy with this place, the food was lovely, the staff nice, an overall good time. The same cannot he said however for dinner time. We waited for our food for almost an hour, nothing was the same as it was during the day, the soup was like water and when the childrens meals arrived, simple chicken and chips, it was cold. Nobody seemed to have any idea what was going on. There was no manager present either as it was the "weekend". We were eventually given a phone number for us to call for the manager who was very unhelpful and didnt seem to be interested in our concerns. Legendary because of wide variety of fresh cakes, good coffee and athmosphere grown with time. Oldest cafe in Tartu famous for many poets and academics visiting it through time. Now popular for students and other citizens enjoying cozy atmosphere inside and comfortable seating options outside during summertime and of course high quality desserts and bakery. Definetely a MUST when visiting Tartu!
