Tired of the hustle & bustle and of protecting your phone in Paris? Take a TGV and head to Colmar in a couple of hours. Colmar and its surrounding villages are in the Alsace region in north-eastern France. It is a stone throw away from Germany and Switzerland, and the confluence of the three cultures gives Colmar its unique charm with a rich history, beautiful architecture, delicious cuisine, and more.
Make sure you head to Caveau Heunhaus (caveau means wine cellar in French and heuhaus means hay-house in German) in Eguishiem, often voted France’s favorite village. Enjoy a glass of Alsace wine and delectable French dishes in open air, with an artiste elevating the evening with French & English melodies. Have a chat with Olivier, who will serve you with a big smile and an abundance of conviviality and humor.
The folks in the Colmar region seem to have unlocked the true secret of good living with a smooth pace of life, ornated with quality, elegance, friendliness, safety, and true joie-de-vivre.
The region is full of history, some dark, like the must-see Natzweiler-Struthof Nazi concentration camp. Colmar is also near picturesque places like Strasbourg in France, Basel in Switzerland, and Freiburg im Breisgau in Germany.
With its pleasant, dry, oceanic climate, and its majestic mountains, the region is ideal for the famous Alsace wine. Get intoxicated by a trip along the Route des Vins (wine route) in Alsace.
Americans will feel a special connection with Colmar. The smaller but towering State of Liberty there honors sculptor Auguste Bartholdi, a Colmarien who designed the iconic...
Read moreI had an extremely disappointing experience at this restaurant. I specifically ordered a vegan Tarte flambée and made it very clear to the server that I did not want any cheese or cream, only vegetables. I even repeated the request to ensure there was no misunderstanding, and the server assured me it would be prepared as I asked. However, when the dish arrived, it had crème on the base. When I pointed this out, the server responded rudely, stating that it's not possible to prepare it without cream, and didn't offer an apology or any solution. This level of customer service is unacceptable, especially when I was clear about my dietary restrictions. I ended up paying for a dish that wasn’t what I ordered and was treated poorly in the process. Very disappointed, and I will not be returning.
Response to Owner:
It’s very disappointing to see such a rude and unprofessional reply from the owner to my review. Instead of addressing my legitimate concerns, I was met with personal insults and an utter lack of respect. Customer service is about treating guests with courtesy, and this response demonstrates a complete disregard for that. I had hoped for a constructive conversation, but instead, I received insults that are entirely inappropriate. This behavior is unacceptable, and I stand by my original feedback about the poor service and lack of respect I...

Right from the off you're made to feel welcome and the servers have very good language skills being in a tourist spot. We only had flammenkuche (I say "only" because it's closing in on pizza territory) but the smoked salmon and herbs worked a treat and washed down with a little Alsace wine that wasn't particularly expensive by restaurant standards. The feeling is that this is where the locals go and no doubt I'll visit here each time we go to Eguisheim. Had a quick natter with the owner, nice guy and was very accommodating when I mentioned a small party booking for the year after.
We might have been the last ones to order food that night. Nobody made us feel rushed, we were amongst the last to leave and everything made for a splendid night out in this beautiful old town. You can't book but if you turn up and you're told it's a 15 / 30 minute wait just take a seat on the steps and wait because...
