I stayed in Colmar for a month and so I really got to try a number of places for viennoiseries and pâtisseries in the area - this place is by far the best not only in quality but also the price is unbeatable. On top of that, I found the people who worked there to be so incredibly kind and welcoming every time I visited, which meant a lot since I was there alone for a recharge of mental health. The seating gives view of the cathedral and one of my favorites was sitting and watching the storks in the morning with the quotidien combo. The pain au chocolat was better than any other place I tried in town (perfect crisp on the outside, distinct chewy layers, 2 bars of chocolate). Also loved the croissant aux amandes.
Side note: I’ve seen some reviews that make me really sad to see from other tourists. While I speak some conversational French, I think it is really important to try and just learn the basics as a gesture of goodwill (how to order, eat inside or outside, card or cash etc). They always kindly indulged my spotty French and spoke slowly and articulately for me, which helped me get some practice in. Some folks saying they should just speak English bc it’s a touristy area, please realize that some may not have chosen to be born here nor wish to cater towards tourists and that’s okay. Just give a little effort and politeness and you’ll be treated with politeness in return.
Their kindness made this place a little refuge during my stay, particularly the blonde woman who worked there! Thanks so much and...
Read moreI can say in total confidence that this place serves the best Flan in the entire universe. I actually teared up when taking the first few bites. It's not "nice". Or "tasty". It's GODLIKE. Everything 10/10 - consistency, temperature, sweetness - even the way it looks. The bottom was wet but not soggy, succulent but firm. Perfection!
Yeah... it's 7 EUR a slice - quality has a price and in this case a price very much worth paying. I'd have bought another slice if not for my other holiday mission, which consisted of finding the best Creme Brulé in the universe. Yes, I found that too - in Straßburg! In an effort to at least try and prevent myself from becoming rotund, I had to display a semblance of temperance ;)
The place itself is nice and open, rather unique overhead construction, gave it a fresh, wavy feel. The espresso was also the best one in Colmar out of about the ~4 I tried... though WHY they mystifyingly call it "expresso" in the region shall remain unknown, and indeed unexplained... forever. 10/10, absolutely recommended, may Zeus electrocute me today if a better Flan is even...
Read moreLet me start by saying, the coffee, and food was good. However the service was really rough. The place was about 2/3 full. Went for coffee and pastries. After the about 20-30 min ours cappuccinos arrived, but they forgot about half our order. Had to re-order, then we finally got our pastries.
Our side of the restaurant seemed to be neglected. Us and 2 other tables near us got no service, while we watched the other side of the restaurant have 2+ groups of guests seated, order, served, and leave.
Asked for our bill, and we were told they would bring it to our table. So we waited, 15 min. No bill. Went up to the counter to pay (as can usually be done) then was told to please wait, they would bring us the bill. (10 more minutes) Still nothing. Finally the table next to us also walked inside asking to pay and leave. They were told the same.
About 95+ min to have a simple coffee...
