Staff are cheerful and friendly and the entire experience was memorable. The place was quite when we visited, so it was almost like my husband and I just had the entire place for ourselves. We found out about this place through the Paris Pass and this was high on their recommendation list.
What to do before you visit - Make sure you go to the O'chateau website and book for a session. We took the wine tasting session that was free for all Paris pass owners. You just have to book the date you are visiting. The exact time slot is not required. Make sure you enter your Paris pass number in the booking form to ensure you have a confirmed slot. You will then receive an email from O'Chateau confirming your booking and giving you directions to visit them. Keep a copy of your confirmation form handy when you visit. It will make the entry smooth.
The tour starts with them telling you to download an app onto your phone that will take you on a journey through the wine cellar. The app is called "Wine in Paris" and if you don't have a smart phone, worry not they will give you a ipad with the app downloaded. You will have to return the ipad at the end of your tour. You are now all set for the tour.
You walk down a flight of stairs and into the cellars..The tour is interactive and there is a lot of fun to have with little games and quizzes on your app... but you will be on your own to explore and decide how much you want to learn.. the tour starts with a room filled with different types of soils and use your app and it will tell you about the different regions of France, their soil types and how that soil influences the taste of the wine from those regions, then room 2 is the smell room that will teach you to distinguish different aromas and then Room 3 is the Taste room where you get to taste different flavors to distinguish the suttle tastes in a wine. Then move to another room that talks about the brewing and ageing of wine and then a room with some fun facts about wine. Then finally into the bar..This is were you will have an instructor who will give you an introduction talking to you about the different types of wine and the more questions you ask, the more he will start explaining. He even got out a huge map of France to explain about the wine regions.. Then finally he will present to you a selection of wines and you get to pick any 2 wines of your choice and taste test it and savour it.. There is seating in the bar.. so you can sit, chat and enjoy here. There are also 2 photo booths in the bar, go in and get a picture.. there are props in the booth.. so you can get wacky..
Once you are done with the wine tasting, then walk up a flight of stairs and back into the O'chateau store. At the store they will ask you whether you want red wine or white wine as a souvenir and at no additional cost, you get a souvenir bottle of wine with the photo you took in the photo booth printed over it as a label! Well thought through experience. By the way there are several optional additionals that you can throw into your experience and customize it but we went for what was free with the Paris Pass. You can even get yourself a diploma in wine tasting after this experience for a little extra. Check out the O'chateau website for the prices for the add-ons.
France is popular for its wine and there's nothing like going through a Wine tasting experience in France and taking home a bottle of wine from there.. An experience I would highly recommend...
Read moreWow! Wow! Wow! This place, O Chateau is hardly a new find, but we were there for the first time and this experience was so special, especially because of AB. I’ll get to that (the third wow!). The first wow! Is for the collection on wine by the glass- we Are hardly the first to find it. They are well regarded and won the Wine Spectator Award for Execellence in the year 2018 and the Trip Advisor Award of Excellence in 2018 as well. The wine collection shows the pedigree. The second wow! Is for the excellent cheeses they have to offer. They are a restaurant as well, and if the cheese is anything to go by, the food must must be spectacular! Too bad we didn’t get there early enough to order anything. I’ll get to that in this third wow! THE THIRD WOW! Is for the people (Shout out to our rockstar, MR AB)! We are his groupies at this point!
We got to this place pretty late, they close at 12 midnight and kitchens close at 10pm. Having spent the evening on a wild goose chase of a special wine and cheese experience ( we are really not very planned and tend to do things in the last minute), we arrived here at 11pm, on the eve of thanksgiving and they had a thanksgiving event the next day. They advices us that the kitchen was closed and they wouldn’t be able to offer any food. So we ordered a glass of Pomerol and Pommard. We requested Mr AB if we could have some cheese just to enjoy the wine and he went above and beyond and gave us a small cheese platter that was phenomenal! He didn’t have to, after all they had a special event the next day and the kitchen was closed. But he decided out of kindness to let us have a small plate of cheese. We were already ready to just enjoy the wine, but the cheese was a windfall! Maybe the spirit of Christmas came early, and we were blessed. So we asked for two more glasses or wine, and asked Mr AB, the expert Sommelier to pick and he suggested two Gamays- one from Beaujolais and on from Jura! The one from Jura was amazing! Relatively unknown, but oh so good! The perfect sip that satisfies both the palette and the nose. I was transported to a field of flowers in the valley, in which these grapes were cradled! I am not an expert by any means, but I know what I like and I liked this. So I told Mr AB that it was by favorite and he just kept giving (a whole bottle of it, the Gamay, in our case). This will easily be one of our best experiences as both tourists and wine lover.
Kindness and generosity like this leaves a lasting impression! Reaffirms kindness and oneness in this world! The place has a fantastic repute and they absolutely s not have to accommodate us travelers who are are not regulars. But they did and what a joy it was. Like Christmas came early! If we are ever in Paris again, O Chateau will be our first spot! We are now big fans of both O Château...
Read moreLittle more than a tourist trap. It is certainly not quality Parisian dining. There is a wide selection of wine but the prices are far higher than you'd pay elsewhere. We booked a dinner with wine pairings. When we arrived they greeted us quickly and seated us at a table in a section with other people who had booked the same. Everyone around us were tourist. There were no locals in the entire place - this was the first clue. The entree was a large piece of soft cheese on top of some watercress with a sun-dried tomato cut into thirds around it. We were told that the entree was beef (something we don't eat) we asked for alternatives. We were told we could have fish and I said I had don't like white fish and was told that was the only option. SO IF YOU ARE NOT A BEEF EATER, DON'T COME HERE! The table next to us arrived ten minutes after we did and received their beef fifteen minutes before our fish came. They must have had to go to the Seine as it took thirty minutes between our entree and our fish arriving at the table. Once it got to us, it was moderately cooked in a mild cream sauce. The new potatoes that come with them were over cooked. There was nothing else on the plate but the fish and potatoes in the sauce. The desert, we were told, was "Chef's Choice" so we had no choice. It was a chocolate mouse and a scoop of chocolate ice cream. Both were fair and the best thing we had all evening - which is sad and disappointing. Regarding wines, we were served a sparking wine soon after we were seated. About five minutes before we were served the cheese we were given a dry white wine. After our cheese we were served a white wine that was to go with our fish but, as I said, it was 30 minutes before we were served so it was no longer chilled and did not enhance the entree. With desert we were given an incredibly sweet wine that neither of us drank as it was far too sweet for our taste. I am sure some people would enjoy the meal we were served. But I did not appreciate the limited options as the food was not to my taste. The staff are very nice and speak excellent English as this is a place targeting tourist. I could have paid far less and received a meal more to my liking elsewhere - and will do so...
