Being a Parisian novice finding himself at the Arc de Triumph with a growling stomach, but wanting a little taste of some genuine famous French Cuisine in his last night in Paris, I took a chance on Cafe Lateral just a block away which I found on Google under "inexpensive restaurants" (of course we're talking relative to Paris pricing). I must admit that I did stick out in the well-heeled crowd, clothed in my finest tourist regalia of strapped on zoom camera, fanny pack, and of course the lime green quick-dry shirt (and I'm pretty sure I was the only one speaking English in any conversation around me), but I was made to feel very comfortably and appreciated by my young Bangladesh-born waiter who saw me struggling with the French menu (he discreetly pointed out the small print English translations below the French items). So I ordered my half order of delicious butter-drenched escargot in the shell and a glass of exquisite white wine, and left with a great big ol' smile and only €17 lighter. So bottom line...I do highly recommend Cafe Lateral for any other French Cuisine newbee, or anyone who enjoys reasonably priced delicious food at a quiet, quaint...
Read moreMy wife and I were looking for a simple, Parisian breakfast, and Café Latéral had exactly what we wanted. We had been in Paris for a few days already, and tried out a few places for breakfast but hadn't found a spot that impressed.
The location, price-point, speed of service, and taste were all well above average. We didn't order anything complicated but it seemed that the basics were very strong. It made me wonder how they fare for lunch and dinner dishes.
A lot of other cafes and breakfast places will charge 5.50 euro for a cup of espresso with a dash of hastily made milk foam and be glad to serve it to you. Check out the picture of the delicious looking cappuchino that came out, and for only 1.50 euro more when you order with breakfast! A little bit of care really does go a long way. I would recommend Café Latéral to anyone visiting the Arc De...
Read moreThe food was not really good, but maybe it just were the dishes that we picked (burger and Caesar salad). The burger patty was very thin, and it came with a coleslaw salad inside the burger that was not a great match. The quality of the meat was good though. The salad was a bit dry a lacking flavour overall. Maybe if we would have ordered French dishes instead, it would have been a whole different story.
However, the service was outstanding. The young lady that served us was kind, attentive and patient. We were quite tired after a very long day of travel and then sightseeing, and she helped us through the menu and guided my wife to a wonderful wine choice. We would go back just to have a couple of drinks and say hello to her again. Regarding the location, you are right next to Arch de Triomphe, so, really...
