La Contrescarpe has a lot of character and charm. My waitress couldn’t have been better. The food though was a bit, meh. Maybe I didn’t get the right dishes. Mayonnaise eggs and steak frites could have been my fault and not the restaurant’s, but the eggs were prepared a little lazy compared to what you find elsewhere in Paris (similar to American Deviled Eggs style is the norm in higher end spots) and the beef was difficult to cut and chew. The desert of “toast swimming in caramel”, was great, but if you like caramel, salt, butter, and vanilla ice cream then it’s not a difficult lift. Wines were a bit young, but fairly priced. The neighborhood around tracks very young since it sits outside the Sorbonne. It kinda feels more like the established place you take your parents when they visit you at university because of tradition rather than it having remarkable food. If I take myself back 15 years when I was doing some abroad coursework at the Sorbonne then I probably would have thought La...
Read moreTwo restaurants we wanted to go to were closed so we decided to find something close and chose this place. There was indoor and outdoor seating. We chose to sit inside to eat. The restaurant was a good size, warm and cozy. There was a leak close to our table dripping into a bucket. The bathrooms were clean. The staff we interacted with were not rude but not friendly either. We noticed that the people who came in a bit after us got offered for their coats to be taken but we were never asked. The escargot was very good and the onion soup was as well. Nice and hot. The burgers we got were a let down though. Quite large and hard to eat. I felt there was also a lack of taste and was not spicy at all. Our biggest gripe was how long everything took. Most of the people there were only drinking and we did not order a lot or anything complicated. It took a long time to get our food. Maybe our experience was a one off but I don’t think we...
Read moreWe happened on this place our last night in Paris and it was perfect. We were out early (maybe 6:30) since we had an early flight the next morning and got the first seats inside the restaurant, sitting right in a large walk-through window looking out on the square. The view was excellent, the food was yummy, abundant and reasonably priced, and the service was quite good - including little things like putting out a bowl of nuts while we were waiting for our food. The staff spoke English and even put ice in our glasses without being asked (the high that day was over 90). The atmosphere in the square and the restaurant was fantastic! Highly...
