Welcoming, charming, tourist friendly service. A little French traditional and a little modern in design, super enjoyable ambiance. They will put up with you practicing your French!
Clean and easy to access modern bathrooms just opposite the bar. A beautiful patio view of La Place des Vosges (parc) - even when it rained. Was a lovely place to eat a late lunch, daydream, and drink a pot of tea (they have high quality tea! I even overheard a British mother with her son make a point to compliment the waiter on it). The single lady next to me was Romanian, and when she left and it began to rain, a local young lady moved to read her book by the view. Behind me - Americans and Brits switching back and forth from English to French.
Order the "formule" - meal combos of the day written on the board, a reasonably priced combo of entree+plat or plat + dessert.
I had the entree and main: tarte de brie (baked brie tart) and filet de maquereau (mackerel! So many words to learn, je l'adore!)
The tart was rich but not too rich; I needed to add no seasoning, it was perfectly balanced. It was so rich I had to eat it slowly, but in a good way.
The fish was perfectly crusty, but the star for me was the ratatouille - I had paid no attention to the details when ordering the dish, focusing on finding a healthy protein.
It was honestly the best ratatouille I've ever had - and I have tried it many times all over the world, usually not on purpose but just like here, as an accompanying side dish. I usually can't stand it, as the squash and zucchini are always bitter and the dish balance is always off in some way - sour or mushy or salty or bland. This was so perfectly balanced in every way - my plate needed no seasoning, the acid, salt, complexity of flavor, slight crunch of the vegetables - I was impressed, and grateful to finally taste this dish as I assume it had always been intended.
For that, I say thank you, chef! Marveilleux.

Read moreThe tartar was very good. The duck and mashed potatoes were both cold and inedible.
Two things we did not like about the service:
When finished dining (we did not eat the duck), the servers did not react properly to the complaint that the food was cold. Some apologies would have been sufficient. What we got was a scolding that we did not tell at the beginning that the food was cold. Eventually, the price of the dish was removed from the bill, but that’s a bitter-sweet victory. And no, sending the dish back to the kitchen is generally risky business, I prefer not to, thanks. Also: reheated mashed potatoes? For the price, those should be fresh!
When ordering glasses of wine, the proper way to serve the wine is to bring empty glasses and pour the wine in front of the customers. Otherwise, how do we know that we’re getting the expensive wine that we ordered? In our case, the expensive wine was...
