Le Pétrin de Pigalle — Restaurant in Paris

I went into this shop because I saw the amazing cookies from the window outside. I really planned on only eating "French bakery items" during my few days in Paris before heading to Provence, but the cookie with berries semi-baked on top called me. It was amazing!!! I dream of that cookie and have tried to recreate it at home in Los Angeles. (Only tried to make it once so far and it wasn't bad but it wasn't Le Petrin's cookie.). I just looked up where I got this by looking at my credit card charge--that is how much I loved this super delicious treat. We actually have some very good French-inspired bakers near where I live (see Petit Grain Boulangerie in Santa Monica, CA or Artisanal Goods by CAR in Pasadena, CA as great examples of other baked goods that I dream about). Today, I visited this place again, remembering my last experience and a friendly conversation with a young man who mentioned he had Turkish roots like me and spoke English fluently. Since I don’t speak French yet, I politely asked in French, “Do you speak English?” To my surprise, the same person responded curtly, “No, you speak French!” I smiled and explained, “Unfortunately, I can’t,” but he repeated, “No, you speak French!”

This interaction felt unnecessarily hostile and left me quite upset. While I fully understand that speaking English is not a requirement in a French-speaking country, I know this individual does speak English, and I believe I deserved a kinder response. First found this place around the corner from our AIRBNB in February 2019. Everything we got was delicious, but I was impressed with their glazed donuts. I even made a second trip to grab a few more while we were waiting for our Uber as we were leaving. Fast forward to November 2022 and we were back in Paris. There's no way I was going to miss those glazed donuts. We got some of the white chocolate cookies with the red fruit-Amazing! The croissants were delicious. Nothing we have gotten has disappointed.
