Amazing meal and gracious staff. A cozy, cheery place for fine dining, at a reasonable price, on a cold night. They fortunately had an opening at 9:30 pm (we were a party of two who showed up without reservations at 9). Reservations probably lot needed in general, I suspect. We had the set meal options (limited choice of dish options) — one of us had the 3-course option, Entree+Plat+Dessert, for 37E, and the other just the Entree+Plat option for a bit less — this worked out well for us, as the dessert was plenty enough for two to share. They also have a regular menu with other dishes. Fresh ingredients, expertly prepared and presented, with friendly, attentive service. Menu changes often. On the night we dined, the set meal had 4 options for appetizers (“entrees”), from which we chose the seared tuna, and the carrot soup with shrimp. From the 4 options for the mains (“plats”) we picked the seared scallops with cauliflower (chunks of cauliflower, plus a delicious purée of same), and the rum steak (like a medallion of beef) accompanied by grilled leeks and fancy tater tots (puréed potato filling, crispy exterior sprinkled with sea salt). I am usually vegetarian so my partner had most of the scallops, while I ate most of the potato tots, but what I had was still amazing and filling. For dessert we picked a plate with a trio of hazelnut ice cream, mousse, and chocolate ganache-type dessert. Dining at Les Canailles was the best French dining experience I've ever had. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the restaurant team was passionate and confident about their service and dishes, everything. Their down-to-earth dedication took my breath away. The restaurant foreman inspected his territory like a general. He led us into seats, then we ordered two bottles of wine and were served two sets of glasses. After one bottle was finished, the empty bottle and one set of glasses were immediately removed, and no one of the five present even noticed this!
As for the food, there's simply no need to mention the perfection of cooking, the ingenuity of sauces, everything was unparalleled. There were things like the aromatic veal tongue and veal heart, seasonal fresh fish that I've never tasted before, and so much more. I'm pretty sure this could easily be sold for close to double the price at other restaurants, but once again, Les Canailles convinced me with their graciousness and generosity.
