It's good! No, I mean it's good, not great, not out-of-this-world excellent, it's good!
Walking towards the restaurant today I was surprised and dismayed at the same time to see a huge group of people congregating around the front of the restaurant. Now if you're in Paris and you see loads of people in front of any place, it means you're in for a wait and such was the case with Street Bangkok.
Once you start to queue, you have someone from the restaurant who hands you a menu and explains how the menu works. Basically very nice and friendly and the menu is pretty straightforward. You have three choices, one is salad with meat, the other is meat with rice and the last is meat, rice and salad. You also get a sauce choice to go along with your meat.
For me I chose the rice and meat option (sukhumvit), basically the middle of the road price-wise. Cost for that choice is 12 euros. I chose the pork with the Bangkok classic sauce. For the price a drink was included (non-alcoholic) and I took a bottle of water, mini bottle of water.
Once the order was placed, you simply walk forward and collect your food, it's prepared very fast. You then take your choice of drink and sit down. Seating can get tight but the people do turn over pretty quickly - and those who want to go full brasserie and not get out once they've finished have the appropriate stare down with those waiting for a table - all in all the system works.
Onto the food. I chose the pork and I think they used pork belly. If you're familiar with the cut, it's meat with a big strip of fat. That's exactly what this was. My only gripe here was that there was a load of fat proportionally to the rest of the dish. The sauce was very nice, kind of a bit of peanut with some nuoc flavor. There wasn't much spice to speak of and the rice itself was sticky and good.
Now, I gave this restaurant 3 stars because while the food was of a good size and the taste was spot-on, the problem I had is that they needed something else to break-up the flavor. If there was 1/4 less rice and meat and some salad I would give this 4 stars all day. If you added a nem/eggroll, I would give this a 5 star. If you then added a shot of vietnamese moonshine, I'd clean tables for the restaurant.
I'll probably end up going back as there are more things I would like to try. And for those of you who are debating whether to go, don't think too hard, just go, give it a try and get the menu with a salad and share,...
Read moreI have been frequenting this restaurant since their early days...and yesterday I was completely disappointed. I ordered my favorite from them, Pad Thai and it was just bland, and slightly soupy......in which world is Pad Thai supposed to have soup🤌 and they reduced the portion sizes as well.... And my partner ordered a salad which was again quite bland and he kindly asked for a replacement, to which the Chef came storming to our table almost ready to fight.. though they replaced it at the end, the whole interaction was uninviting.
Would not recommend unless they get their affairs in order again and perhaps get a good course in customer service. Quite disappointed to see a place like that go downhill. Used to be cool but...
Read moreUnfortunately I just had a terrible Som Tam in this restaurant. It was bland and basically all the ingredients were missing or only present in homeopathic doses. I lived in Thailand for a year and know what it should look and taste like. When I asked the waiter to return it he sent the manager. Instead of taking it like a pro she was quite angry and snappy and defended the poor dish. They added some ingredients in the end, but it still wasn't good. The Pad Thai we ordered was also quite bad, but the flaw was less tangible, so we didn't...
