This place sure has changed, and for the worse. This used to be one of my "go-to" spots in Paris for a meal or a nice coffee break, however I can say confidently I will never return after the numerous recent off-putting experiences here.
I arrived 45/50 minutes before closing time on a Saturday and I was told they could only serve teas and cakes as they were "closing right then and there" and had nothing else to offer me. I had not lost all hope for this place yet so I ordered a drink but it was definitely not filled up all of the way. 40/45 minutes later, and 5 minutes before their actual closing time, the family and/or friends of one of the servers arrives and order numerous glasses of champagne with no pushback whatsoever and relaxed on the terrace outside while everyone else was warned to leave or ignored.
I came back a couple of weeks later, having conveniently moved on from the above disappointing experience, however this experience was the worst yet! I had to go inside after quite some time spent on the terrace, to grab a menu for myself and a friend, as nobody was surveilling the terrace. Service was slow, which I can live with. However 5 minutes after ordering a latte, our server came back and I was told they didn't have it. I ordered something else and the mug and spoon were both clearly dirty not only with smear marks, but with residue of food. How unappetizing and not no mention unhygienic! I got up to go pay inside (as same issue as above, don't count on the table service) and I was told the card machine did not work, which I understand can happen. However the option of the app "Sunday" was presented to me with a 0.99€ service charge! I lost respect immediately; any restaurant that puts fees on their customers can be wiped from my book. I am doubting if their card machine was really broken or if they wanted to push this QR code payment system on me to avoid card machine fees? Luckily I had cash on me, which they are legally obliged to accept. Both lattes (charcoal + green tea) I ordered were not good, quite gross actually and extremely overpriced. The actual items I ordered were the least of my worries, what has turned me off for good was the lack of cleanliness and disregard for customers.
I don't think I am the only one to have noticed that prices have increased by quite a bit.
And I didn't even mention one time a friend and I waited so long for eventually nobody to come to our table that we had no choice but to leave if we wanted to eat or drink anything and gosh I am happy we gave our money to a different establishment.
I would say I am sad to see this former neighborhood spot turn into a place that is overpriced, lacking quality of products but most blatantly, lacking even the lowest standard for service, client experience and hygiene, however these experiences make it just that much easier for me to know where NOT to go and where to tell people to...
Read moreSo disappointed… As a expat resident of Paris for 7 years, I’ve been feeling rather homesick lately, as often happens. I found Treize Bakery on a blogpost specifically written for just such occasions, where you can get a taste of home and are likely to meet other expats. YAY! I was so excited to give this place a try! So much so, that I rearranged my entire morning to accommodate their 10:30am opening time. I arrived in the area on foot just before 10:30 and could see the doors open but all the chairs still stacked inside so I did a quick tour around Luxembourg, then headed over. I arrived at the restaurant at 10:38, a few chairs outside but inside still a mountain of tables and chairs. I thought I heard a “bonjour madame” but looked around and couldn’t tell where it came from so I went inside. No one. I went back outside a saw a young woman picking up trash and cigarette butts with her bare hands and setting up tables, but she made no further attempt to interact with me. I said hello and asked (in French) if they were open. No, I was told. I inquired if they opened at 10:30. “Ce n’est pas grave” I was told… so basically, it’s not a big deal (maybe not for her). She then switched to English and said she was by herself and it takes a long time to open. I said I’d planned my morning around the 10:30 opening time. She shrugged her shoulders and said I could sit and wait or maybe I should come back another time. I told her no thank you and I left. In an attempt to try out Treize, I arranged my schedule to accommodate theirs, and was planning on paying 14€ for a latte and a detox-type juice. However, I went home and made them both for myself and it probably cost 3€, tops - and my kitchen had been open since 7am! Here’s a suggestion; if you cannot open at 10:30am then please don’t advertise to customers that you can. Or how about this crazy idea? Get to work early enough so you can. Not impressed. Won’t be back.
Ps, pardon my sarcasm but not only was I inconvenienced, I was really disappointed - and I’m already having a bit of a difficult time. Moving back home won’t be possible for the foreseeable future and I was hoping to find a place where I...
Read moreMy friends and I had a great experience having brunch until we went to pay! First things first, the food is incredible, we all left with happy bellies and had a great time chatting with our waitress (who I gather may be the owner) until we went to pay.
The issue came when we went to pay. We were a group of six and after only two of us had paid and clicked no tip on the machine, she chastised us for not tipping for a solid couple of minutes. Like, loud, uncomfortable rambling. She clicked no tip on the screen for the remaining four people. My issue was this was extremely rude and it is not customary to tip 10% in France, maybe a couple of euros sure. It is appreciated but not required as it is in the States. She commented on how Americans come to Paris and think they are getting ripped off so they don't tip, but it simply isn't the custom here to tip every meal, even if the service was good. This was the first and only time I have been chastised for not tipping in France and I've lived here for years. The other issue is she didn't wait until the last person paid to comment. We were planning on tipping in cash and some felt obligated to after her outburst. For all she knew, maybe the last person in the group was going to cover the tip, or we may have tipped in cash. The moral of the story is she was rude, we all felt very uncomfortable, and when I'm paying 30€ for a main dish and a side, and I know minimum wage is livable in France, I shouldn't be forced to tip.
Honestly, I wanted to give 2-3 stars but as someone who works in the service industry, I don't want to tank their ranking as the food is great and the other staff were really kind. But the service at the counter to pay was disrespectful and flat out rude. It left a really bitter taste in our mouths after we were all very happy with our...
