Hippopotamus Steakhouse — Restaurant in Reims

Very popular restaurant with a good choice of food and beverages. I dined here on two occasions. Both times I started with duck "foie gras" pate, and chose burgers for main course. The steak house burger was not as enjoyable as the cheese burger which I had on the second visit. I am not a fan of black burger buns, however much in trend they are! The pate was served as a slice, with bread (one time it arrived plain, the second time toasted, which I preferred). There is no garnish or traditional accompaniment (jam or chutney), which would have elevated the dish. The French fries on the second occasion were so much better than the first, but again no mayonnaise or ketchup (maybe it's not the French way to serve!). The second portion of chips was larger than the first, so it appears there can be some inconsistency in quality and portion control. The restaurant itself is clean, fresh and vibrant with a peculiar atmosphere - a real steakhouse! I had an enjoyable time and would visit again. Everything that could go wrong went wrong here. We went inside at the time the restaurant opened, but it took 15 min for the whole staff to start their shift (while the restaurant was already open). You could hear the staff laughing in the kitchen while we were waiting to be seated. It then took another 15 minutes before they got our order, and another 45 minutes before we got our food. On top of that, the quality of the meat was very poor too. A lot of fat on the steak, no condiments used (which made it a very boring and flavourless piece of meat). The fries also lacked condiments, and when we asked for mayonaise we had to ask 2 different people for it and wait 10 minutes because they forgot about it. By then we already finished our fries. Excellent from start to finish. UK family staying at the nearby Ibis on our way back from the Alps and we couldn't have found a better place to eat that night. Our food was excellent, my steak has gone into my top 3 all time best steak list! I'm very sorry but we did not get the name of the waiter looking after us but he was brilliant, understood our less than perfect French and his English was very good.
