I really wanted to try some local Toulouse cuisine, so I booked a lunch at Au Gascon. It was nestled in a quaint little street right off the main road and had an authentic "local" vibe. The atmosphere was relaxed and a bit rustic, with friendly service that befits the southern hospitality of the region.
We ordered one formule menu of entree + plat + dessert and another single order of cassoulet, which was what I really wanted to try! The salad with chevre cheese was decent, though I recommend not ordering this if you are not a fan of goat cheese. The main of confit de canard (duck leg) in an orange sauce was nice, as the citrus complemented the fattiness of the duck well. The highlight of my meal was the cassoulet. I'm not well-versed in this traditional Toulouse dish, but the cassoulet that I got was delicious and exactly what I expected. The bed of baked beans, duck leg, and Toulouse sausage that made up the cassoulet made for a very hearty meal (we did not finish the dish between the two of us given the large portion size). It was a perfect accompaniment for the table bread as well. The sausage was quite good too, without too many spices, so allowing the taste of the meat to come through naturally. The Panna Cotta dessert was...
Read moreIf you're looking for authentic Toulousian cuisine, you've come to the right place! As you explore the city, you'll quickly learn that Toulousians have a deep love for canard, which is prepared in hundreds of different ways. One particularly famous dish is cassoulet, a hearty mixture of canard, sausages, and beans.
If you want to experience the best of Toulousian cuisine, be sure to visit the Gascon restaurant. The food there is absolutely fantastic, and you won't regret spending €25 on a full meal, which includes an appetizer, main dish, and dessert. I was a bit hesitant to try canard for the first time, but after my first bite, I was blown away! It was absolutely delicious, especially when paired with the potato gratin. However, the side vegetables were a bit underwhelming and didn't quite match the flavor profile. As for dessert, I opted for the cheesecake, and let me tell you, it was awesome! I can say that would be the first thing I would order in heaven, if I ever made it!
The only downside to my experience was the cutlery - the forks and knives looked a bit antiquated and I actually didn't have a good feeling...
Read moreThe service made us very uncomfortable because of two reasons: We came to eat cassoulet as it was claimed to be their speciality but they said it was not available. We went ahead with ordering a three course menu (23 Euro each) but found cassoulet was being served to every other guest who came after us without any reservation. This was uncanny and made us uncomfortable. When I asked the waitress ...she said she cant understand English... But I was very clear that she understood what i was saying. Also someone else came from the restaurant and told us cassoulet was all over. This again proved that she did understand what my question was and was able to convey my message to her colleague who tried to cover her up. My order was completely changed and the food that was served wasn't upto my expectation. I visited the restaurant as i was a tourist and wanted to experience French authentic cuisine but was highly disappointed.!!! Will not...
