Atmosphere: It’s a great location, south facing and gets a lot of cozy light so the space doesn’t need much. The space has a lot of rounded corners… sounds weird but I really think it gives it good energy. Decor is low key but the space is so great it doesn’t need more. It’s cute and just right.
Service: Friendly service and got the order right, what else does one need? I don’t know the owner but I know the owner (if that makes sense), as long as I’ve been visiting her establishments, she’s always super lovely (her partner too) and all of her restaurants have always been excellent.
Food: Outstanding. My partner and I loved everything. We started off with some Arnold Palmers and it’s probably the best one I’ve had in a couple decades. Not watery and flavorless like a lot of them (especially in Germany), they really lean into the iced tea flavor and have nice strong tang. Very delicious, very refreshing. The buffalo wings… I typically do not like buffalo wings… or I should say I used to not like Buffalo wings. They were incredibly tender and the flavor was just what it should be. Maybe a touch less vinegar-y, which could explain why I was into them. My partner thought they tasted like the usually sauce (in a good way) but for me something was just less acidic. The beef and cheese sandwich was absolutely bangin! Nothing to add other than it was my favorite of the dishes. Ok, I like, only one small critique. I want it to be like 2 bucks less, or for the money it should include fries. Fries would set it off. It’s not that it’s not worth the money, but life’s getting expensive. Add some fries to it and it just makes the price more palatable. We finished with the ceaser salad schnitzel… also incredible. Everything was incredible. Very tender, just like everything else, and loved having the ceaser on top, made it feel lighter, fresher. Only critique here is that it’s a massive portion. I’d rather they cut the portion in half (or offer a half portion) and just make a better margin on the smaller size. I don’t think it’s priced wrong, I just don’t want that much schnitzel. If you came to share with someone… different story.
Anyway, all around fantastic. Such a welcome addition to the neighborhood!!
Now they need to add brunch to the menu (at least on Sundays) because the brunch options in Mitte are kinda non-existent for the most part and they kill it with their brunch at the...
Read moreEven though this restaurant was quite hyped, it unfortunately fell a little short of our expectations. With prices ranging from €20 to €28 per plate, we had high anticipation for a special experience, but some dishes were already sold out and the rest suffered from poor presentation. It’s definitely too expensive for the cheap presentation. The starter we ordered, which consisted of sliced apricots, a little cream and a tiny portion of freshly sliced tuna, visually looked more like something you would have prepared at home. I don't know if that was simply in line with the concept. The dishes were also cleared away too quickly, so that half of the food was wasted. A no-go for the price - and in general. The main course wasn't much better - the carrots were burnt and covered with sesame and mint in a vinegar sauce, and the schnitzel was carelessly presented with randomly thrown together salad leaves, sauce and some grated cheese on top. Neither dish was visually appealing or tangibly of particularly high quality. The food was pretty unimaginative. Overall, the menu was unconvincing and reminded us more of fast food than a refined dining experience. And for that the price is too high.
Sometimes presentation leaves a lot to be desired, but the flavours are great - however, this was not the case here. The flavours were also a bit of a disappointment. Some of the dishes had a strong vinegar element, which was apparently supposed to add a unique twist, but ended up being too sour and uninspiring. We tried four different main courses and unfortunately none of them lived up to our expectations. Furthermore, having spent some time in North America, I can say that the restaurant did not capture the spirit, creativity or variety of flavours of American cuisine as I know it. For example - schnitzel is not a classic ‘American’ dish either. Therefore, I wonder how it all fits into the overall concept.
On a positive note, the staff were absolutely lovely and professional, which made our visit even more enjoyable. However, neither the ambience nor the food left a strong enough impression on us to make us want to come back. It wasn't a terrible experience, but it just wasn't as exceptional as we had hoped. Ultimately, we felt that the price and time we invested in the visit was not entirely justified. You could call it a bit of a...
Read moreI visited Bertie in Berlin on March 25th, 2022, with a friend visiting from Russia, and it turned out to be one of the best spontaneous dining experiences we’ve had in the city. What’s great is that you don’t need a reservation — we just walked in, and even though the place was quite busy, we waited no more than 10–15 minutes before getting a table. That alone already set a relaxed and welcoming tone.
The food was genuinely exceptional. You can tell from the first bite that there’s real care and creativity in the kitchen. We ended up ordering nearly the entire menu out of curiosity, and not a single dish disappointed. Some clear standouts were the perfectly cooked eggs, the flavorful chicken Caesar salad, and especially the roast pork — incredibly tender and seasoned just right.
The ambiance is another highlight: warm lighting, cozy yet modern decor, and a buzz of happy diners all around. It felt alive but never overwhelming. The staff were also fantastic — super friendly, attentive without being pushy, and happy to offer recommendations.
It’s the kind of place that makes you want to come back not just for the food, but for the whole experience. Whether you’re a local or just passing through Berlin, Bertie is well...
