I got to know Frannz and its cocktails because of the Euro 2016 football. They have a nice beer garden with a decent screen showing all the matches. So those of us who skived off work to watch Wales beat England (well, we can dream) could not ask for more.
Frannz is a rare successful attempt to please everyone. It's a restaurant, bar, club and beer garden. It happily serves beer and chips, but it also offers a bit more than that - Flammkuchen, salads, and other real food.
And cocktails. I'm fat enough, I don't need more beer, so I dedicated my time to Gin Fizz, Moscow Mules and Whisky Sours. Oh and Gin Basil Smash. But cocktails are everywhere in Berlin, right? Yes, but they often use crap gin, crap whisky and lime juice out of the bottle. Not here. Bombay, Makers Mark, fresh limes, fresh basil. The price (€6 to 8) for that quality is very good.
Oh and they have wine. By the glass and, rare in Germany apart from Italian restaurants, a few affordable bottles. So after cocktails, a bottle of decent wine - with a proper glass. Quality.
But the big plus at Frannz is the service. Seriously impressive. The last time I went, I was greeted with a handshake, and the waiter ordered my gin fizz without me saying a word. The staff are friendly and accommodating, which is especially remarkable as there tends to be too few servers. A classic case of management not understanding their own business - an extra waiter or two would help (there can be a wait for food and cocktails), but even that doesn't spoil the quality of the place.
Just for a laugh, I went to the club part (non-smoking!) after the footie. No cocktails, but Krusovice on tap, they get bonus points for that. Not really my thing, clubs, but it was clear that this is not a pretentious place, just normal people having fun.
The low aggregate Google rating is an insult. I guess some people didn't want to wait for their chips. But if you want a bar, beer garden and restaurant with a touch of class but without the pretension, Frannz is definitely...
Read moreBald guy working security on 29th October, pushed me out when I tried to get my friend away from a creep. I wasn't drunk, rude or touching anyone. I guess because I didn't speak German, it's a lot easier to kick someone out.
My friend also came out and explained I was trying to help her and that the person was bothering her (she is German) but I guess when you're brown AND not a German speaker that decision is made already (from reading the past comments)
It's a shame as this place was one of my favourite clubs in Berlin, even pre-Covid but I have never felt discriminated anywhere else as I did that night. My friend did eventually get away from the person, no thanks to security. Not a safe place - if you visit, be alert.
I never want to accuse a place of such behaviour and have never done so in the past - I didn't want to write this review either and forget about the whole ordeal, but it's important for anyone else who visits this...
Read moreWe attended a concert in September 2024 - never have we experience such an unwelcoming and abusive crowd. We were two Australians watching an Australian band and were told to ‘go back where we came from’, we were hit in the crowd with our heads being pushed and arms grabbed and nail marks left on our bodies, we were called ‘bi*es’ by the male audience and told to ‘leave the country’. It was truely awful and disgusting behaviour and it absolutely ruined our night and our entire holiday - we travelled to Berlin for one night literally only to see this one Australian band we love and have supported forever. I hope Aussie bands and Aussie music lovers read this as I do not recommend this venue for any fellow Australians or Aussie bands, unless you are willing to accept this awful treatment of Australian...
