Gugelhof — Restaurant in Berlin

Unexpected gem found in a quiet neighbourhood; it was a cold night in Berlin and finding Gugelhof was a real treat for the two of us. Originally wanted to go to another restaurant nearby with higher ratings but Gugelhof was busier so we opted for it instead.

Service was immaculate, all the waiters were friendly and quick to respond. Great wine suggestion provided. Good attention to detail. Warm and bustling atmosphere but we never felt disturbed by other guests.

Three course meal: Duck Liver Creme Brulee - savoury and sweet flavours well matched, with delightful salad and sides to complement the dish. Schnitzel - first time having the German classic, crunchy and fluffy batter with well seasoned meat along with refreshing cucumber salad made for a wholesome meal. Saddle of Deer - flavourful and tender meat, brussel sprouts weren't avb but the grilled cabbage that replaced it was exceptional, potato...

I rarely write reviews. But I have to on this restaurant. I came here based on Rick Steve’s German guide book. I love food from the Alsace region in France. It should have been a red flag when I was seated that everyone in the restaurant was speaking English not one German ( probably here because of Mr Steve’s book) the appetizer I order included a salad. OMG the salad was terrible some of the dark greens were so wilted the were black and I swear the dressing tasted fishy. I couldn’t eat it. Called the waitress who agreed the cook came out to see and agreed. That appetizer should never have left the kitchen. I was so disappointed with the meal over all. my expectations were pretty high and it fell way short. Beware lots of good restaurants in Berlin stay away from this place Rick Steve’s need to cross this one...

I worked at this restaurant for 7 days. Every day, the chef/owner, Ganeshu, would promise that we would sign a contract tomorrow. This dialogue continued for 7 days, and then I asked for payment to cover my rent. Ganeshu bluntly replied that I was here to learn, so he wouldn't pay me any money. He treated me like a third-class laborer. I performed all kitchen activities, yet he didn't pay me a single euro. He kept giving me false hope, saying he would eventually make a contract and help me with visa extensions or work permits. He suggested working for free for another month, but I know it's all nonsense. He's a liar and an unprofessional chef. The food is unhygienic; all the ingredients are frozen for months, not fresh. He tastes food directly with his hands, without gloves or a spoon, which is very unhygienic.

I'm sharing this to warn students from Asian countries or anyone else: don't get trapped like me. I wasted 7 days hoping for something better. Ganeshu may try to contact me after this review, but it won't change anything. I'm leaving Germany because of this terrible experience.

Ich habe 7 Tage in diesem Restaurant gearbeitet. Jeden Tag versprach der Chefkoch/Eigentümer Ganeshu, dass wir morgen einen Vertrag unterzeichnen würden. Dieser Dialog dauerte sieben Tage, und dann verlangte ich eine Zahlung für meine Miete. Ganeshu antwortete unverblümt, dass ich hier sei, um etwas zu lernen, deshalb würde er mir kein Geld zahlen. Er behandelte mich wie einen Arbeiter dritter Klasse. Ich habe alle Arbeiten in der Küche erledigt, er hat mir aber keinen einzigen Euro bezahlt. Er machte mir immer wieder falsche Hoffnungen und sagte, er würde irgendwann einen Vertrag abschließen und mir bei Visumverlängerungen oder Arbeitserlaubnissen helfen. Er schlug vor, noch einen Monat umsonst zu arbeiten, aber ich weiß, dass das alles Unsinn ist. Er ist ein Lügner und ein unprofessioneller Koch. Das Essen ist unhygienisch; Alle Zutaten sind monatelang eingefroren und nicht frisch. Er probiert das Essen direkt mit den Händen, ohne Handschuhe oder Löffel, was sehr unhygienisch ist.

Ich teile dies, um Studierende aus asiatischen Ländern und alle anderen zu warnen: Lassen Sie sich nicht wie ich in die Falle locken. Ich habe 7 Tage damit verschwendet, auf etwas Besseres zu hoffen. Ganeshu wird nach dieser Rezension vielleicht versuchen, mich zu kontaktieren, aber es wird nichts ändern. Aufgrund dieser schrecklichen Erfahrung verlasse ich...
