“A true Berlin Kiez pub with smoke, politics, and character”
Kuckucksei is one of those rare places that hasn’t been polished away by hipster Berlin. Tucked into Schöneberg, just a short walk from U7 Eisenacher Straße, this is a bar that feels more like a time capsule than a business.
The setup is unmistakably left-wing: political posters, stickers, retro decor, and a lived-in vibe that makes you feel like you’ve stumbled into a meeting point for activists from decades past. It’s smoky inside (yes, smoking is allowed), dimly lit, and unapologetically old-school.
What works well: • Atmosphere: Dark, retro, smoky, and absolutely authentic. This is not a sleek cocktail lounge – it’s Berlin as it used to be. • Drinks: Cheap and straightforward – you’ll find local beers on tap (a small Helles around €2.70) and standard spirits. Budget-friendly and no frills. • Service: Generally friendly and attentive – bartenders speak English and know how to keep the flow going. • Inclusive vibe: The crowd is mixed, queer-friendly, and relaxed. Everyone is welcome here without judgment. • Flexibility: One of the best features: you can bring in food from outside and eat inside while you drink.
Things to know before going: • It’s a smoker’s bar. If you hate cigarette smoke or expect to leave smelling fresh, this is not your spot. • It gets loud and cramped. Don’t come here for a quiet conversation. • Service can be hit or miss. While often warm, some guests have experienced brusque staff – but honestly, that’s part of the Berlin pub DNA.
Verdict: Kuckucksei is a no-nonsense Berlin Kiezkneipe: cheap drinks, smoky air, political flair, and a genuine sense of community. If you want authenticity and atmosphere, it’s a gem. If you want comfort and clean...

The music, at least when I visited, was mostly old rock. It was actually very refreshing, as there were less known Dire Straits tunes (not Sultans of Swing), as well as a lot of Ozzy, Zeppelin and Hendrix.
Only thing I didn't like was the lack of space. You should either go there with a lot of friends to occupy a big table fully (reservations seemed possible), or you should make friends with everyone there, as you'll be sitting right next to each other and it can be difficult to carry a...

Kuckucksei, along with it’s staff and regulars truly holds an important place in my heart. Thank you, - Antonella PS. Their Mexicaner is amazing. Whenever you go, it usually takes like “essig” , but not this one. If you hate the idea alone of a tomato drink (like me), try their Mexicaner, it will change...
