There is a surprising number of traditional German restaurants in the Nikolaiviertel area but I think this one claims closest proximity to the actual church. With outdoor sitting just a few steps from the church courtyard, you get a very small village experience in the heart of Berlin! Or if the weather doesn't agree, there is very quaint inside seating that can fit a few groups. The service is your standard German service and they're friendly enough (and they speak English). You'll be paying Nikolaiviertel/Mitte prices, but you're really paying for the atmosphere, which in my opinion is worth it since the food is actually really good! I got a Schnitzel a la Meier (fried egg on top) while my date opted for the Bratwurst. While it wasn't the best schnitzel in town, it was actually tasty and comes with potatoes and cabbage. All in all, I'd say this is a fantastic option if you're in the area and looking primarily for a gorgeous, relaxed atmosphere near the church and are agreeable to some traditional German dishes. Oh and get the cheesecake!

Cozy Gem in Old Town Berlin – Delicious Food & Warm Atmosphere Tucked away in the charming streets of Old Town Berlin, this small, vintage-style restaurant is a delightful find. The atmosphere is wonderfully nostalgic, with its old-world decor and intimate setting that makes you feel right at home. The food is a highlight—flavorful, hearty, and prepared with care. Even as a vegetarian, I had some of tasty options to choose from, and each dish was fresh and satisfying. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, adding to the warm and welcoming vibe. Whether you're looking for a quiet dinner spot or a taste of traditional flavors with a veg-friendly twist, this place is definitely worth a visit. A true hidden gem!

A gem of a place to go. And a rare one at that too; with so many trendy and global restaurants and chains springing up around Berlin, finding a bar and restaurant that holds tradition of the old German style can be so difficult to find. And they do it with Old World German courtesy at that too. The Postdamer Pilsener is priced at €3.50 a half litre, and the meals are generous, and great value too, averaging €7.00. There is no Wi-Fi - for a reason. The barowners want the customers to appreciate the feel of an old Berlin pub and restaurant without modern conveniences getting in the way of enjoying the experience. That, I say, is a small price to pay for an experience that you are not going to get just like that in too many other places, especially when you can make many new friends, like a lovely couple from Munich who joined me at the table; we were still chatting for another hour after our meals were finished. Blood sausage is my fave. Oh, did I say that Potsdamer is my fave to drink there? I'll be back...

I wish I could sort my impressions/rating into various categories because I would like to give positive credit where credit is due but, as you are most likely looking for a place to EAT, I must give Zum Nussbaum low, low marks. Now, if you are someone who thinks that a pub/bar is not a restaurant and, thus, has no responsibility to quality and service (as was literally suggested by our shockingly rude waitress) and if you like crappy, sub-quality bar/pub food (with somewhat small portions), then you probably wouldn't mind eating here. Also, if you just want a beer (ONLY beverages) then take advantage of this quaint, cozy pub. BUT!! if you want nice service and better than greasy, flavorless cafeteria-style dishes then, TRUST ME, there are WAY better places to eat a schnitzel or wurst in the area. My 10 year-old son makes better schnitzel...
