The Café de Paris Cologne brings a slightly hectic but still comfortable atmosphere. The decor is busy but not overwhelming and the seasonal decorations are more or less subtle and compliment the main theme of the place quite well. Some tables are placed in relative proximity to the service station wich can lead to regular noise of plates stacking and normal staff gossip. The spots in the left back corner should be avoided if you want a more romantic and intimate atmosphere.
The staff is welcoming but not too intrusive. The service is constant and always a bit less frequent but still quite aware, although it is not always clear which waiter is manly responsible for your table which sometimes leads to misunderstandings. Overall it's a very good service for the type of Etablissement and it fits the price range of the food.
Speaking of which: the menu is split in three periods, that being breakfast, lunch and dinner. Personally I can only refer to breakfast and lunch with my experience at the time. The breakfast menu gives a good variety from the basic scrambled eggs to some more extravagant french classics. It is always presented in a very Instagramable fashion, but luckily the quality of the food does not suffer from it. What should be moist, is moist. What should be crunchy is crunchy and the products are mostly high quality and fresh as far as I can tell. The portion sizes are regular and as is to be expected. Concerning the lunch, the meals are very well presented and seem to be exceeding the price tag a bit. Although not being cheap. The meat is cooked well and the dishes match the seasonal theme subtle. Matching the quality of the breakfast. The coffee is very good and to this point I have yet to receive a cold espresso. The only disappointment is that they do not serve a free glass of tap water with it, which should be a given at this price range.
Overall a more expensive experience, but in my opinion worth the money and a...
Read moreSo wanted to love Cafe de Paris! Alas, it was quite a disappointing experience overall. We walked past it a million times, but it's usually very busy on weekends, with no available tables, so I was very excited this past Sunday to find a free table in the outside area in the beautiful and warm sun. The Good: The food was delicious and very pretty looking. We both had the asparagus soup, and the Fromage (cheese plate) and a rigatoni pasta dish for main course. The Bad: service was super slow and unavailable. Perhaps there is a staff shortage, I am not sure. We waited 15 minutes for a menu, then another 15 minutes to order drinks. Then another 15 to 20 minutes for someone to take our food order. By the time our food arrived we have been sitting there for way over an hour. It was a beautiful sunny afternoon, so that still would have been fine. What was wild is that both soups and both main courses were all brought out at the same time :( There was not even enough space on the small 2-people table, so they just took away our half finished drinks, the bread basket etc to squeeze space for 4 plates.) Of course, by the time we finished the soups (which were VERY delicious) the pasta was completely cold, and the cheese plate looked less pretty than on the photo I took, because of being on the sun. Not great. It was another 30 minutes wait until someone showed up, so we could order more drinks and after-meal coffee. There are so many lovely spots right around...come here if you don't mind having a bad service in exchange for good looking food and fun people-watching while you wait. (Highly recommend Cafe Rico, just few steps away - always...
Read moreAn absolutely horrible dining experience.
Took so long to be seated even after the server seated two people who walked into the store after we did and completely ignored the sign that said “wait here to be seated.” He said he “simply forgot” before we got seated.
We had to wait a long time for someone to take our orders but the rude lady immediately pointed out that I could not have my reusable water bottle on the table and that I had to put it on the chair next to me so it was not visible (?). I have never had such an experience from all the restaurants I’ve dined in.
We had to wait an insane amount of time to get our food (that was very simple to make). Over 45 minutes.
When the food came, it was very average and simple. The egg was far too runny for sunny side up and felt underdone. The price was extremely overpriced. Paying 30 euro for a coke and two breakfasts (pictured below). All of which could be made with a fraction of the selling price.
What put insult to the injury was when we asked to pay and the waitress said yes and then proceeded to go outside, play smiling faces with a baby in a stroller and go to rearrange cutlery. We waited another 10-15 minutes before getting up and going to her to pay there and she said “so you want to pay?!?!” She begrudgingly put the amount into the machine so we could pay and leave.
Not coming back, the value for money, disregard for the customer and terrible service is appalling. But of course, I, the paying customer, is being unprofessional by having my water bottle on the table. They can feel free to be as irresponsible and rude as...
