Mangia e via GmbH — Restaurant in Cologne

We are Americans visiting Germany and decided to go to this restaurant which was down from our hotel because they had good reviews. Our interactions with the owner or manager is what prompted me to write this review because I felt like he was very abrupt and rude. Not good customer service or very welcoming. He appeared to speak English well so I don’t believe that was a barrier. We requested to sit at a table inside, however because there were only two of us, he wanted us to sit outside. I expressed my concern about being near smokers, but he insisted. That got us off to a little bit of a bad start. My husband ordered a shrimp cocktail and the menu stated in English it was prawns with cocktail sauce. When it was brought to our table it was a pile of small shrimp that looked and tasted like bay shrimp smothered in a light red sauce. Although I realize there are cultural differences with presentations, we expected this to be shrimp on a glass with cocktail sauce in the middle for dipping. So I felt it was our fault that we didn’t ask, but the definition of prawns certainly did not fit the kind of shrimp we got for this appetizer. When I mentioned this to the owner or manager, he became defensive, went to get the menu and started pointing out other shrimp dishes, as if that would clarify why the prawns were the way they were. He wouldn’t let up so we just let it go and said we would pay for it, but did not want it because it did not taste good. Not sure why, because he never acknowledged any fault or disrespect on his side, but he later brought us a plate of shrimp which looked like they were shrimp scampi. The penne pasta with a red cream sauce and mushrooms was tasty. I enjoyed the 4 petite rolls, sturdy but soft crust served with herb butter. I was happy to have all 4 rolls as a solo traveler. It's Colonge so the beer had to be a Kolsch. I had room for creme brulee which was a special on the chalk board...good but uninspired. The atmosphere is almost library quiet with some sort of classical music softly playing. I was only slightly annoyed by the fruit flies. Very average overall. Good food but not a must-do. Food was delicious, service was really friendy

We ordered a pizza and a pasta and both were cooked to perfection.

Pasta was large portion, sauce was really flavourful without being heavy. Pizza toppings were good portion and again very flavourful

If I was going to be really picky and find a fault, I just can't.

Absolutely eat here.
