Zu Den Zwolf Apostel is a small restaurant brewpub with great German cuisine and decent house beer. The multistory building has their oval logo and a street corner entrance. Along the side of the building is an outdoor patio area with many thick wooden tables. Just inside on the left is half-bench table seating and their wooden bar with a stainless steel tap tower. The bar is for staff service only, so all customers sit at a table. Behind the bar is their small kitchen, which produces enticing aromas. The real draw of this place is their delicious cuisine. They have traditional German cuisine, steaks, and some Balkan dishes. On the right is their small dining room with tables on both sides. A large window on the back wall looks into their white tiled brewhouse room. They have a small copper brew kettle which is wood jacketed. It is not a large operation and they have just two house beers on tap. I was impressed with their Hell blond Lager, but didn't really enjoy their Dunkel dark Lager. Additionally they have a guest Hefeweizen on tap and several bottles of guest beers. The place has a rustic ambience with white walls and thick wood beam architecture. The ceiling is painted maroon red and there is dim lighting and classic decor. Ironically, pop American music is playing. The staff is very welcoming, prompt and friendly. I enjoyed this charming...
Read moreI have visited Zu den 12 Aposteln several times over the past six months or so. The exterior dining facilities are pleasingly rustic, clean and the trees provide a natural feel. The interior is more medieval in tone, dark heavy wood is the dominant theme. It is not to everyone's taste, as a coworker pointed out to me. However, for those of us who enjoy the "traditional" decor, I couldn't think of anyplace more suited for me to enjoy my dinner.
The food is good, with ample options on the menu. I did note that the food was better on some days than others, but nothing to complain about. The house beer was very good, crisp with a hint of spice. I wish I could go into more detail, but my taste seems to lack the refinement necessary. I seem to fall into that category of people who believe there are great beers and there are good beers. Unless it's a wheat beer, seriously, who thought that was a good idea?
The staff has always been excellent; quick, courteous and efficient. If you're in Frankfurt, I think you would be hard pressed to...
Read moreI was in search of an authentic German food and found this restaurant next to my hotel. Today is Sunday and was able to get in without a reservation and was asked if an hour was fine.
I was debating whether to get schnitzel or pork knuckle. With the recommendation from the server, I went with the pork and she was right… it was delicious! I paired it with light beer. With the generous food portion, I couldn’t finish it all.
Then came the paying time. My bill was under 25 euros and apparently the restaurant only accepts credit cards if the bill is at least 45 euros. I didn’t have cash with me and asked the server that I need to get cash from my hotel which is literally next to it. She grabbed my phone and took it as collateral! 😳
It was a little embarrassing and it felt weird. I came back 5mins later to ransom my phone back! Anyhow I still enjoyed my dinner time that I am...
