BonVivant Restaurant — Restaurant in Frankfurt

Rarely do I fall in love of a restaurant. It comes as a surprise, no big reviews from famous bloggers. Just a number on a list. It wasn't even our first choice. I had a reservation via Quandoo on maps, which actually didn't come through but we got the table anyway, and that was the only thing that wasn't good about the night. Here you are welcomed in a small local in a normal neighborhood, nothing more than a small, old-built room with about ten tables. You have to sit for a couple of minutes in order to get the place and let go of your prejudice. It is very personal, there is no "staff" there is just one waiter, a polite young man which gets what you order right everytime. Don't prepare yourself for tens of choices because you won't get them There are limited choices which vary from time to time, this time there were fish, steaks, one lamb and one chicken dish. Sometimes there is pasta and other stuff. I ordered a gin and Tonic which I normally only drink at home because I order more complex cocktails outside, but there weren't. However he got it just right, and got my attention. Since we were there for our anniversary we didn't focus on food so we just ordered the main dishes. I went for the lamb chops, a classical, and honestly, it is the first time in my life that the side overcame the meat. A side of yam purée that just stunned me and made me feel like Anton Ego in Ratatouille. Never will I enjoy a perfectly cooked rice side ever again. The chops themselves are just perfectly seasoned an cooked. The nice bonus is a perfect portion. The chicken pan with vegetables was also perfect. Since I couldn't leave it at that I went for a desert. Another heavenly dish called crème Catalan. A spanish specialty that preceded crème brûlée. I haven't thought that I'd enjoy a milk based sweet that much. It was the perfect finish after a meaty match. Our other choice of chocolate souffle would leave also guaranteed in a wow-state. The next time I write such a review would be cheating...

Besuch: Das passiert selten: Wir waren im BonVivant mit allen drei Gängen sehr zufrieden.

Ein eher simpler Tomaten/Brot Salat zur Eröffnung des Abends hat uns überrascht mit einem raffinierten Dressing, eingelegten Zwiebeln und äußerst schmackhaften Brot. Wie gut doch einfache Gerichte schmecken können...

Mit unseren Hauptspeisen, Rinderragout und Fisch, ging unser Abend auf gleichem kulinarischem Niveau weiter. Die Kombination aus Süßkartoffelstampf und fein abgeschmecktem Ragout war Oberklasse. Der Fisch stand dem Ragout in Nichts nach. Der New York Cheese Cake als Nachtisch war nicht wirklich süß, in Kombination mit der dunklen Schokolade am Boden und oben drauf aber genau nach unserem Gusto.

Selbst die wenigen Cocktails auf der Karte (wir haben drei davon probiert) haben uns gemundet. Zusammen mit der sehr freundlichen Bedienung, die verbindlich, aber unaufdringlich ihre Aufgabe erledigte, bleibt uns nur eine fünf Sterne Bewertung in allen Kriterien.

Der Gastraum hat Wohnzimmeratmosphäre, die authentisch alten Anrichten sind schön anzuschauen, die sichtbare Steinwand ein Hingucker.

Eins noch: Die Preise sind hoch, sogar sehr hoch. Normalerweise geht bei mir dafür ein Stern unter. Aber im BonVivant scheint mir das angemessen: Es macht mich glücklich, ab und zu das Herausragende unter dem Besonderen zu genießen - entspannt wie im eigenen Wohnzimmer. Dieses Gefühl ist mir einiges Wert - so gesehen ist das Essen im BonVivant den Preis wert.

Update 2. Besuch: Das Essen konnte uns wieder vollends überzeugen. Was der Koch in der winzigen Küche kredenzt, ist aller Ehren wert. Da können wir auch darüber hinwegsehen, dass zwischen Vorspeise und Hauptgericht bei vollem Haus schon mal 45 Minuten vergehen können...

Der Service allerdings wurde in unseren Augen dem Anspruch des Restaurants nicht gerecht. Ein völlig unverbindliches Auftreten verbunden mit einer innervierenden Hecktik, ja Kopflosigkeit, haben unsere Entspannungsbemühungen zunichte gemacht. Darüberhinaus griff die Bedienung mehrfach unerwartet und auch unnötigerweise über unsere Schultern auf den Tisch, um Essutensilien und private Sachen hin- oder herzuschieben oder ganz vom Tisch zu entfernen. Das empfanden wir als äußerst unangenehm.

Die Preise sind gestiegen. Wir haben für eine geteilte Vorspeise, zwei Hauptgericht und eine Flasche Wasser über 100 Euro bezahlt. Da die Portionsgrößen der Hauptspeisen nach unserer Erfahrung auf eine Mehrgangskombination ausgelegt sind, verliessen wir das Restaurant dieses Mal doch etwas hungrig...

Obwohl wir die ursprüngliche Bewertung nicht wesentlich verändern, haben wir nach dem zweiten Besuch aufgrund unserer Erfahrung mit dem Service beschlossen, das Restaurant BonVivant in absehbarer Zeit nicht mehr...

We've been to this restaurant before and it was delicious. This time we booked a table again a week before and wanted to go today. Too bad when you come there and they tell you that they have no space. We said we reserved a table and they said, well the weather is bad and they have no space. Either we can sit outside (rain, 14 degrees, tables not even set) or we leave. The worst about it is we had called an hour before our reservation to push it back for 30 mins and they said, no problem. Latest then they must have told us they have no space for us, but they only said "okay" .. very disappointing and also no way to treat customers WITH a reservation. We assume the group of 8 people had just called last minute and they took their reservation - 8 pay more than four, I guess. Very poor treatment and a good reason NOT to come again when you then have to search for another...
