Not easy to find a restaurant that opens on Sunday in Freiburg. Taking the funicular up the hill to the restaurant is the quickest way but you don’t get a discount for the ticket as a restaurant patron. Food is good for Germany’s standards but you need to be have all the time in the world to dine here. Preferably if you’re retired and all you care about in life is food. After we sat down, they took literally half an hour to bring us the menu. One of the waiters was really rude, asking inappropriate questions in a curt manner. Did he think this is the way to chat up girls? The waitress was much nicer and more helpful. The food took another century to arrive. We waited for so long between each course (we had three courses each), that we got hungrier and hungrier as the meal went on. Normally we couldn’t finish the portions in Germany but because we waited soooo long for our food, we ate everything. Maybe the food seemed good because hunger is the best seasoning! The table next to us seemed to be friends of the owner and each of their courses was served very promptly - one immediately after the other. They didn’t go hungry during the meal like we did. We probably won’t be back unless we have run out of things to do in life. But you can come here to have a drink and enjoy the bird eye’s view of Freiburg. 3 stars for the food. 1 star for the service 2 stars for...
Read moreThis restaurant was recommended by another restaurant that we had eaten at the night before. Sadly the food did not live up to expectations. The starters were good, the entres ok but the mains were particularly poor - my duck meat was so over cooked it was grey and the mange touts so over done they were disintegrating on the plate. My daughter’s main was spaghetti and Black Forest mushrooms and the spaghetti sat glued together in a big lump and mushrooms were under seasoned. The wines were good. The reason I have given such a high rating is the service was excellent. The waiter, Hadi Raschid, made our night. When we walked in he noticed the staff had set a table up for us away from the window (the view being the main attraction) without us asking he immediately moved us to a table by the window, changed the table linen and made us feel genuinely welcome. I have noticed a general lack of good service in German restaurants, one could die waiting for service or the bill, waiting staff are inefficient and avoid serving people, etc. This was not the case here, this young man was professional and efficient without being over familiar and he was so good he managed to make a mediocre meal a good one...
Read moreMy experience here was very brief. I came on a Wednesday, 1,5 hours before closing time, for a piece of schwarzwald kuchen and a beer. Dattler was recommended to me for one of the best places to get schwarzwald kuchen.
As I arrived, the waiter was very accommodating and friendly. Throughout the night the various staff have been very polite and professional.
I sat outside, next to wall which overlooks the city including the cathedral. This view is probably one of the best in the city. It started to rain while I was enjoying my cake and beer and the staff lowered screens between me and the view to protect me from the rain but not low enough to block my view (very considerate).
I had been waiting to try this cake for a long time so my expectations were high. It was really nice but I realised then that I'm not a big cake lover. No fault to the cake, it's just not my preference.
I only ordered cake so I don't feel like I can give a fair rating for the food, only the service...
