O Farol — Restaurant in Hamburg

Lovely Portuguese restaurant near the waterfront of Hamburg and in the cult neighbourhood of St Pauli. The place is in an area full of Portuguese restaurants that make you feel far away from Hamburg as you turn around the corner.

The service was clearly the highlight of the place. Familiar, close, attentive and friendly service made our experience much much pleasant. They spoke English, Portuguese, German and Spanish.

Food was very good, tasty and portions were right. They offer a very wide selection of fish based dishes. I ordered the dorada with potatoes and my girlfriend ordered gambas al ajillo, which I would recommend. We went a bit late so they were out of a few options (I was really rotting for bacallau). The price was right considering it is Hamburg and very similar to the other places we passed by.

Very good Portuguese food! The mixed fish with squid surprised us so much. We ordered the shrimps with brandy sauce and it was good but not so well served and we ordered rice on the side. Great environment where you can sit outside on hot days and order some wine (we ordered the white wine with 400ml that was served on a jar and it was totally worth it for 9,50€). Great service and the waiter spoke German, Portuguese and English. Good and clean bathroom with free tampons, deodorant and good toilet paper....

Adeus O Farol Seit 2013 waren wir regelmäßig im Farol. Nach Spaziergängen am Hafen, vor Konzerten im Michel oder einfach mal so. Immer hat es uns gut gefallen, der Service war freundlich, die Speisen frisch. Ja, man konnte im Farol auch Dinge essen, die in Lissabon oder an der Algarve so oder ähnlich auf den Teller kommen. Vielleicht lag es an der „Tapas-Welle“, die das Portugiesen-Viertel heimsuchte, das sich die Dinge änderten. Jorge, unser geschätzter Kellner war nicht mehr da, das Personal wechselte, bei jedem Besuch waren es andere, was für sich kein gutes Zeichen ist. Als Realisten, die wir sind, ist uns schon klar, rund um die Dietmar-Koel-Straße muss man um die Kundschaft nicht wirklich buhlen. Die Touristen-Ströme fluten regelmäßig die anliegenden Restaurants, jeder bekommt seinen Anteil, und die Gäste kommen in der Regel nie wieder. Die Nachfrage bestimmt das Angebot. Und doch befällt uns ein bisschen Wehmut nach den vergangenen Tagen, nach carne aletejanna oder Frango na pucara, der Sopa do dia oder Coelho com vinho. So ist es jetzt Zeit Adeus zu sagen. Wir haben schöne Momente hier verlebt. Aber alles hat...
