We loved our visit and would definitely stay here again. ||We thoroughly enjoyed our 2-night sojourn at the Burg Hotel and whole-heartedly recommend staying there. The hotel was a perfect fit for our visit to Rothenburg ob dem Tauber. ||Herr Otto Berger checked us in and he was as traditional - old school - as one could get. His Reception desk featured merely a pad a ledger with lists names of guests arriving and departing. He carefully drew a line through our name to confirm our arrival, handed us keys (not magnetic swipe cards and certainly not keyless app-based access) before taking us up to our room. I did spot a computer in the office behind the seat but never saw Herr Otto at the terminal.||Herr Otto was almost always to be found at the small lobby, usually seated at the table greeting his guests in English and German. He would inquire as to their plans for the day and how their day had gone. I twice overheard him regale guests of how, back in 1986, he had had conversations with a certain Argentine priest who would walk past Burg Hotel. Father Jorge Mario Bergoglio was spending a few months living in Rothenburg to learn German. Of course he was speaking of Pope Francis.||He was unfailingly courteous. He asked about our car and promptly guided me to the large barn a few buildings back up the road from the hotel. He directed me personally into my parking spot. He would make morning rounds at breakfast greeting his guests and asking how they were doing. It cost only €10/day to park.||The hotel was partly half-timbered and the main structure seemed to be of stone but it was all quaint and picturesque. It abuts the city’s defensive wall overlooking the valley of the Tauber River. The oldest part of the building dates back to the 12th Century and the cellar features multiple stone arches dating back those many centuries. It once housed artifacts that are now in the Middle Ages Criminal Justice museum, commonly known as the “torture museum”||The hotel was accordingly a beautiful and historic hotel that catches your eye as you walk up to it. The there is a small garden up front and grape vines climbing the facade; we could see clusters of dark red-purple grapes during our visit. The interior is likewise quaint but well-maintained and clean. The the nature of the build is such that an elevator could not be installed. Pack small and light to make the climb easier.||Space was not an issue in our first floor suite near the breakfast area. There was a living room with a couch and 2 armchairs. The windows looked east over the convent garden. On the right after the entrance was a surprisingly large bathroom with a bathtub and a huge towel drying rack.||The bedroom had a comfortable four-poster bed, a massive 4-door armoire with the middle doors being mirrored. There was a work desk and a smallish flat screen TV mounted on the wall above it. The 2 windows faced north towards the city wall and one of the city’s 46 defensive towers (Bettelvogtsturm or Bailiff’s Tower) as well as over the convent garden. ||Breakfast was very much a communal affair. I believe family members staffed the kitchen. They took the coffee and egg orders. Bread/pastries, cereal and fruit were available as were selections of cheese and cold cuts. ||The Jakobsweg or Camino de Santiago runs past the front of the Burghotel and you can see the route marker embedded among the cobblestones in front of the hotel. Of course the way lead to the main place of worship in the town, St. Jakobskirche just up the road to the left out the door. The center of this small, historic town is just a few minutes stroll from Burg Hotel.||I recommend turning right from the hotel then turn left and taking a walk along the wall until you reach the Burgtor Turm or Castlegate Tower. Admire the gate and pass through to the Burggarten beyond. The views of Rothenburg across the Tauber river valley are incredible.||Off course Herr Otto will be very happy to offer advice as to where to visit and eat.||I highly recommend spending more than a day in Rothenburg ob dem Tauber and, if you do, definitely stay...
Read moreI am so shocked and disappointed at the way I was talked to and treated by the owners father in law. When I arrived I noticed the bed only had blankets so I requested a top sheet to be put on the bed so he asks the cleaning woman she hands him a sheet and he hands it to me to go upstairs and put on myself? This was a little shocking but not a big deal. This is the first five star hotel I have ever been with without air conditioning.
I returned from breakfast after my first night to find the nice cleaning women just leaving the room, I explained to them the floor was sticky in the area I was exercising and the shower had a large drainage issue the water doesn't go down it just fills and spills over the side. I was a little surprised to have these issues in a five star hotel but I figured they would be resolved quickly and no big deal. I was very surprised to work out again in the morning and find the same sticky areas in the floor and then to shower and have the water fill up and overflow again. When I went downstairs to check out I explained the issues to an older man who I was told is the owners father in law I was verbally attcked for no reason I didn't say I wasn't paying I didn't say I wanted a discount I was just informing him of the issues that I had. When I explained the shower issues two days in a row his exact response was "you should have taken a bath" SERIOUSLY? The response is I'm sorry or anything that resembles it. So then I explain the floor is still dirty after asking for it to be moped and of course with his five star response he goes up the stairs and puts his hand on the floor in two to three places and yells it's not sticky here? This is how the staff treats you at this hotel so when your paying the cost of a four to five star hotel here depending on season realize it's the city and the building you are reviewing not the staff. The staff here is disgraceful I only group them all together because a staff is only as good...
