So good we came back for seconds. It was hard choosing where to go on our second night here to get an authentic German/European meal. We are in Germany for the first time—all the way from California—and only have a few opportunities to eat out. We ate here our first night, so looked for somewhere new, but nobody seemed to have a better menu, so we went back, and are really happy we did, because it was as good or even better the next day!
Service here is friendly, seating is comfortable, the portions very generous, and the food is fresh and flavorful.
The biergarten feels casual—dogs are allowed and the napkins are paper. But be careful: This beach town girl battling Morton’s Neuroma in one foot and extensor tendonitis in the other (I almost had to get fitted for a boot before coming here. I wasn’t sure I could walk at all), after a long day of walking the town and museum, was asked to take her very pained, bare feet (out of their Birkenstocks) off the folding chair. With extreme kindness and good humor, though! Was it still embarrassing? Of course. But really, some feet (my husband’s, being a prime example—remember Fred Flintstone?) are the last things you want to see when eating, so I get it! 😂 My bad! My feet are very pretty, clean and smooth, but there’s no excuse for bad manners, so I was very sorry for my lapse of judgement and hope they will not think poorly of all Americans for my example.
Oh! They also have a decent selection of wine and beer here, by the way. It feels like a favorite spot for the locals and I highly recommend you get a reservation ahead of time if you want to give them a try and want a relaxed pace. They seated us early without one, but things get busy later in the evening, and they will have to...
Read moreWhat a lucky find. We stopped in Rothenburg ODT and found this gem. Rothenburg itself is incredibly charming. If you want historic Germany, Rothenberg is the place. From what I understand this is the town that inspired the movie Pinocchio. From what I can tell, it most likely was. This particular restaurant resulted in one of the best conversations that my wife and I have ever had with our five year year-old and six-year-old, maybe it was atmosphere, maybe it was just Chance, but it definitely made it incredibly memorable. The food was fantastic. My wife had the chicken skewers. I had the pork skewers and the kids of course had chicken nuggets. The owner of the restaurant was very friendly and accommodating with the children. When I offered to do a 15% tip, he declined and said no that’s too much. WOW 🤯 I don’t think that’s ever happened to me in the States. All in all...
Read moreWonderfully peaceful and friendly Biergarten and restaurant on a quiet side street. We both got Cordonbleu and a Helles. The Cordonbleu was outstanding - juicy, perfectly breaded, and with just enough gooey cheese. We talked to the waiter as we were leaving, and it turned out he was the cook too! The man can do it all. Complements to this chef and his excellent establishment. Word on the street is he's looking for waitstaff so he can go back to just cooking. I hope he finds someone because visitors to Rothenburg ob der Tauber need to have the opportunity to visit a place like this to have the real Cordonbleu and Pommes he makes. Don't skip dining at this place when you're in...
