Tzitzikas kai Mermigas has a curious name meaning “the Cricket and the Ant” (after Aesop’s Fable), and one look inside will reveal that this restaurant has a modern art theme and serves creative, beautifully-presented plates of food! Upon sitting down, we were started with a complementary plate of olives and an aperitif of tsipouro, a strong Greek brandy. For an appetizer, the Trilogy of Dips included tzatziki, whipped feta, and smoked eggplant with peppers/walnuts, along with pita chips on the side. Next, the Tzitzikas Salad was a colorful mixture of 10 different vegetables (lettuce, arugula, tomatoes, cucumbers, red bell pepper, red cabbage, green cabbage, carrots, jicama, radish) topped with a mustard vinaigrette dressing, and served with chunks of salty anthotiro cheese and crumbly manouri cheese. For our mains, the Squid on the Grill was a whole grilled squid served with a jet-black puree of fava beans mixed with cuttlefish ink! We also had a special dish of the day, the Grilled Rooster Meatballs, which were served over tomato sauce, along with a feta cheese dip and fried potatoes on the side. The rooster meatballs had a distinct meaty flavor and aroma from the spice mixture, and they paired nicely with the flavors of the tomato and feta. Everything we had was flavorful and delicious, and the highlights for me included the squid ink fava bean puree and the rooster meatballs. The creative food presentation was a step above, and the service was super friendly too!

I feel like we must’ve ordered the wrong dishes here, because our experience with the food here has been quite different from what the extensive reviews of this restaurant and the high ratings would suggest. We came in February on a weekday for dinner and the place was packed (definitely book a reservation!). They held our table for 20 minutes despite our tardiness, which was much appreciated. Service was decently prompt for the amount of patrons there. We ordered the mushroom orzo, the cuttlefish, and a third dish that we don’t quite recall. The orzo was decent - not too special but also nothing to complain about; however, we really did not like the other two dishes. The cuttlefish was flavorless, and the forgotten dish had an excessive sweetness in the sauce that was overpowering. We did not end up finishing these two dishes. It seems like a very popular spot and we sought it out for our trip based on the excellent reviews, and while we really want to like this place, unfortunately the food we had was disappointing.

Update on previous review below: IDK what happened but we came back here a week later on our last night in Greece, and it was one of the worst meals we had. The wine was old, the chicken was dry, and the mushroom orzo was so salty. IDK how it could go from best to worst in 1 week! Really. So, it's a bit of a roll of the dice with this place, folks. Maybe it depends on the day of the week or whether their main Chef is in town or not. --------------------------------------------------------- On our first night in Athens, our driver recommended this restaurant that was walking distance from our hotel. For the first authentic Greek meal, it was out of this world. Everything we had was so good! Best Greek Salad & feta cheese I ever had. Having done some research before coming to Greece, I knew the portions would be big. So we ordered 2 mains & a salad & it was plenty of food for a family of 4 (with 2 kids who don’t eat a whole lot). Almost too much food. Also tried Greek wine for the first time - excellent! Highly recommend.

Wife and I went to this property on our last night in Athens which is located just off Syntagma square. Got there about 7pm and they still have couple tables left. Immediately we liked the vibe in this restaurant, which felt more upscale (and non-touritsy) than many other places in and around Plaka. For a while we thought the service really sucked because there is no silverware settings at all on the table. It took us a while to realize that they are in the drawers underneath the table top, duh! Our dishes looked and tasted quite interesting, I guess more inventive and refined than the traditional Greek food. Perhaps the new fusion flavor is a better description. All dishes were nicely presented (see photos attached), and tasted well balanced. I would not say they are out of this world incredible but pretty decent indeed. Overall, an enjoyable dining experience.

Came by for dinner with a colleague and wasn't disappointed. We walked up and we're able to promptly get an outdoor table that was available, which already felt like a win considering how popular the restaurant is. From there we proceeded to order away off their menu. There's a comfortable range of food options, and all priced quite reasonably - which was a pleasant surprise as well. Considering how busy the restaurant was, the staff was friendly and food came out without too long of a wait. Looking back on the meal as a whole: the food was all quite good, portions were sizable, and the bill didn't break the bank. No complains 🤌🏽 Bonus: Since there's a decent amount of foot traffic, there are musical street performers that come by (with the hopes of tips from patrons) and the people watching is isn't too bad either.

Best food I had in Athens! First though - the bread they give you when you sit down at the table - wasn't that tasty. But that's a problem in entire Athens since not a single restaurant can give you good bread. Secondly, I had a seafood dinner with rice and it was heavenly! The mussels were great, the shrimps superb (although could've done with a few more) and the calamari was rubbery and good. The rice was made with some broth and tasted delicious. But when you mixed these things together with the race - that's when these already great ingredients stepped up a notch and became a perfect mix! Superb food at a reasonable price (although you can find much cheaper stuff in Athens). Waiters speak English and menus in English can be found too. The sign above the restaurant however is in Greek so don't miss it!
