At the intersection of Mitropoleos and Pentelis street, at the centre of Athens, is the picturesque church of Agia Dynami completely surrounded by the modern building of Electra Metropolis Hotel The Agia Dynami (Holy Power) church was built in the 16th century. The name Agia Dynami refers to the Virgin Mary and was given to the church because all pregnant Athenian women in order to give birth to strong children. For this reason the church’s celebration takes place of September 9th, day of the birth of Virgin Mary. Archaeological finds suggest an altar dedicated to Hercules was once situated here. The church sits above a web of underground tunnels once used to smuggle weapons from a nearby arms maker during the Greek War of Independence.

The Holy Church of Hagia Dynamis is a tiny single aisle Orthodox church that is remarkable by the fact that it is the only one in Athens that is surrounded by a much larger modern building. The Orthodox church refused to cede the land to the government of modern Greece when it tried to develop the neighborhood around the church. Not to be outdone, the government built a large structure around the church that had refused to be demolished.

ENG. Built in the 16th century on the site of an old temple dedicated to Hercules, the church bears to the patron Virgin Mary, and is frequented by women who come to pray for an easy birth. As a result of various political or historical events, the little church came to be included among the columns on the ground floor belonging to an administrative building, which later became a hotel. Under the church was discovered a tunnel that connects it to the Acropolis or a monastery, later blocked. RO.
