I recently had the pleasure of dining at Dimitris Taverna, and it was an exceptional experience from start to finish. The highlight of the meal was the fried calamari, which was cooked to perfection—crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. It was, without a doubt, some of the best calamari I’ve ever had.
The Greek salad was another standout. Fresh and vibrant, it was a perfect blend of ripe tomatoes, crisp cucumbers, and tangy feta cheese, all drizzled with a light and flavorful olive oil dressing. It truly captured the essence of a classic Greek salad.
For my child, we ordered the chicken breast, and it was a big hit. The chicken was juicy and well-seasoned, making it a delicious and healthy option for young diners.
I was particularly impressed by the personal touch added to our dining experience. The chef came out to check if everything was satisfactory with our meal, which made us feel valued and well cared for. This level of service truly sets Dimitris Taverna apart.

Read moreAfter a week of exploring Crete, my husband and I had our final dinner at Taverna Dimitris in Heraklion. We're no strangers to Greek cuisine, having visited Crete and Greece multiple times, but we both agree—this might just be the best Greek food we've ever enjoyed. The octopus was a standout, grilled to perfection, its juices bursting with flavor as if charbroiled by Zeus's own thunderbolt. The tomato and basil salad was another highlight, so vibrant it could've been plucked straight from Aphrodite's garden.
The star of the evening was the seafood linguine. The dish was as if Poseidon himself supplied the catch, topped with a spicy sauce that I could describe the flavor as a creamy arrabbiata—went dancing with some chili's, hitting a solid 20 on a scale of 1 to 10. As an Arizonan, it was just the kick I needed, and thankfully, my Greek husband has developed a tolerance for heat, allowing him to fully enjoy this magnificent dish.
I highly recommend Taverna Dimitris, but a word of advice—either arrive early around 4 or 5 PM or make reservations. Seating is limited, and they won't hesitate to turn you away once full. It’s well worth the planning to experience this...
Read moreStrolling through western Heraklion around the huge wall which encompasses the town we chanced upon this cute taverna. It is right along a main road but also just across from the Mediterranean. We liked the menu and Dimitri ( the chef and owner) along with his lovely French wife were offering fresh mussels which my wife immediately put her thumb up to. And superb they were too, especially, as a "Kiwi", she is a bit of an expert. Big and juicy!! Dolmades and a lovely Greek salad were accompaniments and washed down with a local beer. Such lovely people and a super clean and enchanting taverna. Dimitri was the archetypal lovely happy Cretan chef/waiter.......and ...it's on the flight path so low impressive aeroplanes are slowly going by on there way to the airport...it's all sooo magical....and....it is all so...
